The Alberta Law Foundation (the Foundation) is an independent, non-profit, grant-making foundation that is the largest non-government funder of access to justice in Alberta. For over fifty years, the Foundation has pursued its vision of “Accessible justice for all Albertans” by providing funding for programs, projects and initiatives that conduct legal research and propose law reforms, improve Albertans’ knowledge of their legal rights and responsibilities, and help them effectively exercise their rights under the law. This includes supporting law libraries, public legal education and information, Indigenous people’s legal programs and community and student legal programs throughout the province.

Position: The Foundation seeks a Grants Manager to join its dynamic and forward-thinking team.

Working with the Director, Grants, and collaboratively with other members of the Grants Team and Foundation staff, this position executes and maintains leading practices in grant management, reporting and evaluation in alignment with the Foundation’s objects.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

1.Grant-Making (35%):

  • Under the guidance of the Director, Grants, assumes responsibility for a portfolio of grants.
  • Responsible for carrying out the entirety of the grant process with grant applicants including assessing inquiries and applications, referring inquirers to other funding sources if appropriate, and making recommendations for funding decisions, reporting requirements and the development of grant agreements, in consultation with the Director, Grants.
  • Takes a consultative approach to supporting grantees in developing strong program plans, appropriate budgets, articulating how community needs and planned activities align and developing/tracking outputs, outcomes or other evaluation methods.
  • Where appropriate, seeks consultation from external sources knowledgeable about the applicant or the subject matter of the application.
  • Prepares summary reports and recommendations for the Executive Director and Board of Directors regarding the merits of grant proposals and any other materials necessary to support the decision-making process in consultation with the Director, Grants.
  • Monitors funded programs and projects in their portfolio for compliance with Foundation policies regarding reporting and accountability; analyzes progress reports, reviews audited financial statements, as well as output and impact performance measures.
  • Makes recommendations on requests for amendments to existing grants to the Director, Grants.
  • With the Foundation’s objects in mind, makes every attempt to be aware and informed of current issues or events that may impact grantees, the legal services sector and/or influence future funding proposals.

2.Community Relationship Building (35%):

  • Engages in ongoing consultative and supportive relationship building to gain understanding and build trust with grantees and potential grantees to support the development of new, or enhance existing, programs for funding.
  • Provides continuous and personalized support to grantees to enhance service delivery such as program design and evaluation, data collection and analysis, governance and financial accountability, where appropriate.
  • Engages with stakeholders to assess needs and identify priorities for legal services and programs in Alberta and how the Foundation can play a role in meeting those needs.
  • Serves as ambassador for the Foundation, attends community events and conferences regularly to stay abreast of sector news.

3.Special Grant Calls Development (20%):

  • Participates in research, consultation and community engagement processes with varied groups of stakeholders including grantees, service providers, other funders and community members to gain knowledge and inform best practice as it relates to each special grant call.
  • Contributes to the design and delivery of special grant calls including the development of the terms of reference, budget and eligibility and funding criteria.
  • Supports the Manager, Strategic Grants with required processes in connection with special grant calls, including the development of new grant portal infrastructure and communication strategies.
  • Participates in the evaluation of special grant calls including preparing summary reports and the collection of data.

4.Other Duties (10%):

  • Contributes to the implementation of other Foundation initiatives including Bridging the Gaps, external communications, strategic planning and other projects or programs, as required.
  • Participates in collaborative discussions with other Foundation staff to problem solve and support other projects, as required.

Education, Training and Experience:

  • Post-secondary education and a minimum of 3-5 years of experience working in the non-profit, human services, education, law or justice sector in a position requiring critical thinking and analysis, or a relevant combination of experience and education.
  • Experience in one or more of the areas of the Foundation’s funding objects, working with marginalized communities, experience in the preparation and review of budgets and financial information, assessing and awarding grants, and/or non-profit program design and evaluation.

  • Portrays a positive and professional presence with very good communication and interpersonal skills; easily able to establish a rapport and credibility with diverse stakeholders.
  • Presents a consultative and supportive style, able to work in a team and independently.
  • Empathetic to the situation of vulnerable individuals.
  • Politically astute, able to handle and resolve sensitive issues.
  • Ability to travel occasionally within the province and across North America.
  • Experience in participating in or conducting community consultations would be an asset.
  • Experience with granting software such as Fluxx would be an asset.
