Position Description:

Reporting to the Director, Student Well-being and Support, the Sr.Manager, Counselling and Student Well-being provides leadership to theCounselling team within Student Success and plays a key role across the Collegein contributing to the growth of a healthy campus community at George BrownCollege, where all students have the opportunity and support to succeed. Strategicallyplans the work of Counselling and Student Well-being, contributing to annualbusiness planning, and engaging in new initiatives and projects to develop theservice and the team. The incumbent is responsible for strategically planningand implementing the work of the Counselling team to address student needsacross the college, working collaboratively with academic divisions and otherstudent service areas to maximize resources and efficiently and effectivelydeliver high impact integrated and tailored student services to support themental health and well-being of all students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plans the work of the counselling team, contributing to annual business planning, and engaging in new initiatives and projects to develop the service and the team.
  • Explores new opportunities for strategic service development to increase breadth of mental health focused resources and services, including health promotion, Stepped Care service model, equity-informed practice, remote/on-line resources, and services.
  • Reviews and updates Counselling and Student Mental Health policies and practices and ensures compliance. Ensures policies align with privacy/confidentiality legislation and all relevant Human Rights legislation and that protocols are clear to Counselling staff (e.g. protocol when accompanying a student to hospital).
  • Ensures all counsellors meet and maintain requirements for practicing psychotherapy in Ontario and that all Counsellors continually develop professionally for excellence in service delivery.
  • Leads team meetings, campus meetings, and otherwise facilitates communication, collaboration and peer support across the team, leading the team to high performance.
  • Sources new opportunities for staff to engage across the College with academic divisions and other service areas inside and outside Student Success, to widen access, increase service profile, and tailor offerings to meet a diverse range of student needs.
  • Works collaboratively with the Sr. Manager, Student Support Strategic Integration to ensure the effective allocation of human and other resources across all campuses and the effective implementation and usage of systems and tools such as PointnClick for documenting student sessions.
  • Provides leadership for mental health-related crisis intervention at the College and in residence, providing guidance to the Counselling team and to other college partners, such as Public Security and Safety, residence staff, Office of Student Conduct & Support, OAREHRS, Senior Manager of Accessible Learning, etc.
  • Directs crisis intervention, mental health concern response protocol, and tragic response protocol, collaborating with stakeholders across the college to ensure alignment and clarity of protocols.
  • Participates as standing member of the College’s integrated CARE team, to offer expert advice and participate in decisions around complex student crisis and conduct situations.
  • Leads planning and implementation of communications and marketing for Counselling, sharing activities, service data, and outcomes of the department’s work across the College.
  • Advances outreach strategies to increase cross-college staff engagement with understanding mental health and well-being through our healthy campus initiatives.
  • Represents the College Counselling department at the provincial level, working collaboratively with other Ontario post-secondary partners through the Ontario Counselling Centre Directors (OCCD), sharing information, strategies, and best practices.
  • Participates in college-wide initiatives such as Sexual Violence Prevention Education, and works collaboratively with Peer Mentor +, Accessible learning Services, Residence Staff, International Student Supports, OAREHRS, the Office of Student Conduct & Support and Public Safety and Security, and other areas that support the well-being of students and staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Educational and Experience Requirements:

  • Graduate Degree in Counselling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, or Social Work. With an extensive professional development (certificate training) in a wide variety of current counselling modalities and approaches applicable to the post-secondary context, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness for stress reduction, etc. is required.
  • Must be registered to practice psychotherapy in the province of Ontario (e.g., registered social worker, registered psychologist, or psychotherapist).
  • Minimum of nine (9) years’ extensive experience as a mental health worker/therapist/counsellor, ideally in a variety of contexts, including community-based and educational settings.   • Must have successful experience, and ideally training, providing clinical supervision to counsellors or counsellors in training.
  • Experience providing clinical supervision to counsellors and/or counsellors in training.
  • Lived experience as member of BIPOC community, or other experience of social identity intersectionality.
  • Experience working with collective agreements, policies, and procedures. Understanding of relevant legislation as it pertains to service delivery.

Skills andAttributes:

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of mental health, current approaches to enhancing mental health, common mental health issues facing students, and effective, evidence-based approaches to enhancing mental health.
  • Knowledge and understanding of frameworks for addressing mental health on campus, e.g. healthy campus approach, and how counselling department and mental health initiatives fit within the wider post-secondary landscape in terms of enhancing mental health and well-being and student success.
  • Thorough understanding of current legislation related to college counselling, including privacy legislation, note-taking protocol, Ontario Human Rights legislation, etc.
  • In depth understanding of anti-oppressive framework as applied to college counselling; advanced understanding of social justice; strong orientation toward valuing diversity, addressing issues in access, and prioritizing inclusion.
  • Highly effective interpersonal skills, communication, creative problem-solving, strategic planning, and partnership development competencies.
  • Excellent organizational and operational skills critical to ensuring the efficient and effective running of counselling offices at multiple locations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to uphold the College’s priorities on diversity and equity.
