Supporting student well-being and mental health is a priority for OCAD University. We continue to invest in mental health services and supports offered by our Student Wellness Centre. The centre’s multi-disciplinary team provides safe, accessible, and supportive mental health, accessibility, and wellness supports for students year-round. These include low barrier options through drop-ins and peer initiatives, urgent same day availability, single sessions, scheduled appointments, and 24/7 access to a student support program. Providing a continuum of supports, the centre strives to meet students where they are at to best support their well-being goals through connection, community, and integrated services.

Reporting to the Director, Student Wellness Centre (SWC), the Manager, Social Care and Student Well-being, is a member of the SWC leadership team and institutional Management team, responsible for the effective supervision and leadership of a diverse team of multi-disciplinary front-line staff providing counselling, case management, peer support and social care initiatives for the OCAD University student community.Grounded in principles of equity, inclusion and anti-oppression, this position will foster integrated and trauma-informed approaches in all aspects of service delivery and employee supervision.The Manager, Social Care and Student Well-Being, will monitor best practices, and continually evolve SWC social care services to promote innovative and accessible programming, focused on promoting and supporting student wellness goals.This role will provide direct day to day consultation and supervision, including escalated/urgent response, will need to make quick decisions in high-risk complex clinical situations and provide direct student support as required.

As a member of the SWC management team, this position will work closely with the Director, SWC and Dean of Students, to effectively supervise and support staff, fostering collaboration and a culture of team cohesion and resiliency, as well as continual review of policies, processes, and programs related to the provision of wellness services for individual students and campus wide mental health initiatives. SWC is committed to decolonization and centering the student journey.The Manager will be instrumental in our ongoing efforts to identify, remove and prevent systemic and structural barriers, fostering diversity, equity and inclusion in approaches to staff supervision, program delivery and direct student engagement.

Summary of Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership and Supervision

Conduct risk/safety assessments for imminent risk of suicide, homicide, self or other harm, ensuring timely, effective, and deescalating response to situations Provide consultation for students of concern and actively participate in case management planning Continually review Social Care and Student Well-being programs and identify and implement operational and procedural adjustments as required Lead the recruitment, hiring, and on-boarding process for new programmatic hires Provide ongoing supervision, including goal setting, progress, professional development, performance management and discipline of program staff, including annual performance reviews Provide triaging support and training to front desk staff in complex and/or urgent cases Monitor and assess staff session volumes and students of concern, intervening as needed Research and maintain currency with respect to professional standards and government regulations for services, including record keeping, confidentiality and all other ethical requirements Support and direct or delegate the development of group counselling programs/workshops, collaborate with Student Life and OCADU Student Union on scheduling of workshops/groups and other mental health-related events In collaboration with SWC leadership, support and encourage an integrated multi-disciplinary team within the Student Wellness Centre Provide guidance of a clinical nature regarding setting goals and objectives for programs, individual staff and the Student Wellness Centres based on the needs of the student population Liaise closely with student support personnel and service areas. This includes, but is not limited to, working closely with the Dean of Students, other Student Wellness Centre professionals, Accessible Learning, Learning Services, Sexual Violence Response Safety and Security Services Monitor and approve requests for leave as submitted by staff members, ensuring staffing ratios and coverage needs are met to maintain service integrity

Student-centred Care and Urgent Response

Manage intake processes with students, including response to questions, ensuring proper documentation and providing welcoming and student centered experience Uphold principles of anti-oppression, with acknowledgement and understanding of intersectionality and the impact of colonization on marginalized communities, including IBPOC and 2SLGBTQIA+ students, students who identify as neurodiverse and/or students with disabilities Create safety/wellness plans for management of suicidal/self/other harm risk as needed Ensure students are provided with take-away resource(s), facilitated referral, and clearly identified next-steps for personal support and safety Ensure familiarity with crisis resources/supports to support all OCAD students Assist students whose needs are outside the SWC scope of practice to identify and access other support services and facilitate referral Facilitate group counselling / peer support groups as required Respond to on campus/community crisis events to provide support and direction Support ongoing development and enhancement of peer driven programming and social care offerings through SWC When necessary, provide direct student support, including response to critical/escalated situations Encourage and foster an environment to elicit and receive direct student feedback, individually and collectively, to inform ongoing program development and service improvements

Institutional Engagement and Networking

Cultivate and steward strong working relationships, both on and off campus, to enhance wellness supports and build partnerships to increase supports available for students Work in collaboration with the Student Union, fostering open communication, reciprocity and collegiality, reflective of SWC values to provide all OCADU students with low barrier, equitable wellness programming Engage with institutional committees related to mental health and student well-being, as assigned Maintain membership with the Ontario Counselling Centre Directors (OCCD) group Proactively network and explore community-based resources and other wellness supports for students, building referral pathways and decreasing barriers for students

Administration, Communication and Financial Management

Oversee, monitor and ensure all programmatic staff adhere to administrative expectations, including use of databases, i.e.// electronic medical records (EMR) system, reflective of best practices and PHIPA requirements Support front line administrative staff to respond to general emails related to mental health concerns Monitor, collate and analyze data, for purpose of quality assurance, reporting and accountability, including selection and/or development of assessment tools In collaboration with the Director, identify administrative challenges, develop appropriate plans, and implement and/or adjust software and related processes, working with Student Information Systems & Process Optimization Investigate, recommend and implement service and system enhancements to ensure timely, responsive and excellent student care, reflective of student demand and fluctuating needs Work in collaboration with SWC Management team for annual budget review processes Supervise the acquisition of all programmatic supplies and equipment purchased, with attention to budgetary constraints, consulting with Director as required.

Qualifications

Master's in Social Work, Counselling, Clinical Psychology and/or acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience; Registration with a regulatory body in Ontario Significant front-line experience, with a minimum of 5 years progressive supervisory experience in community mental health Working knowledge of Mental Health Act, Substitute Decision Act and Health Care Consent Act, PHIPA/FIPPA, as well as solid understanding of community resources and complex health care systems Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and work collegially in a multi-disciplinary unionized environment, supervising, coaching, and supporting a dynamic and diverse group of staff Alignment with student centered approaches, reflective of anti-oppression, accessibility, harm reduction and trauma informed care Direct experience and awareness ofstructural and systemic barriers faced by those from marginalized communities, with acute understanding of intersectionality and impacts of social location when navigating health supports, in particular, mental health services Experience managing urgent/crisis situations, for all involved, capable of making timely decisions with sound judgement and discretion, in consultation with the Director as needed.Formal Crisis Prevention and Intervention training is an asset Understanding and value alignment for peer driven programming and services, rooted in community needs, lived experience and social prescribing Demonstrated respect for individual, cultural, community and organizational diversity, including the ability to identify and understand intersecting issues related to gender, age, sexual orientation, disability, race/ethnicity, immigration status, religion, Indigenous heritage and gender identity Clinical competence and comfort working independently to manage crises, determining the appropriate level of clinical intervention and provide ongoing counselling as required Experience with partnership development and stakeholder engagement Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both orally and in writing Direct experience and confidence using electronic database systems, for purpose of service provision as well as monitoring trends for purposes of reporting and quality improvement Demonstrated commitment to the principles of equity and diversity, and experience promoting a respectful work and learning environment for students, staff and faculty, particularly in relation to wellness and mental health Team player, with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and independently, and display a high degree of initiative Excellent analytical, problem-solving skills; ability to respond to variety of needs of various stakeholders Strong computer skills with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and experience with electronic medical records platforms Outreach advocacy and health promotion experience considered an asset Flexibility of working hours will be required to meet student needs which may arise outside of traditional working hours
