Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Health and Wellness, the Supervisor, Harm Reduction and Health Supports will be responsible for ensuring the development, sustainability and delivery of harm reduction programs at 65 Dundas East. The Supervisor, Harm Reduction and Health Supports also provides peer supervision to the Peer Harm Reduction Workers and Peer Health and Housing Workers, and provide resources, training and support to the 65 Dundas staff team including Case Managers and Community Workers. They will play a crucial role in supervising the 65 Dundas overdoes response, which includes staffing support and building/infrastructure support and will work in partnership with 65 Dundas staff as well as the City and Public Health.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Build partnerships and collaborate with other harm reduction programs in the Downtown East
  • Plan and coordinate Harm Reduction activities, including a safe drop-in space for drug users to access harm reduction supplies and information related to health, and street outreach activities.
  • Coordination and delivery of the Harm Reduction Drop-In, including providing one on one practical support to service users.
  • Coordinate sourcing, distribution, and safe disposal of harm reduction supplies.
  • Ensure adequate and ongoing supply of safe substance use materials or tools, including the operation of a kit making program.
  • Support the operation of systems to reduce overdose deaths. This could include the implementation of apps such as Lifeguard Lite, or BRAVE, or peer witnessing or another model that is successful at reducing overdose deaths.
  • Recruiting, training, and supervision of Peer harm reduction and health workers
  • Provide supervision and support to peer workers, including Peer Harm Reduction workers and Peer Health and Housing workers.
  • Work with the Manager Health and Recovery to develop and implement data collection and evaluation tools.
  • Facilitate Seeking Safety groups and/or support the running of the groups by other trained staff and peers.
  • Explore other therapeutic and group opportunities for recovery and learning and growth, such as WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan), or Harm Reduction Café.
  • Assist clients to navigate the mental health and addictions services to support their success in maintaining their housing.
  • Support the Housing Supports team to develop harm reduction support plans as part of case planning and safety planning with tenants. Support tenants who identify harm reduction short- and long-term goals in their support plans.
  • Attend department team and agency staff meetings.
  • Other duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Post- Secondary Degree in social services, health services, mental health and addictions or equivalent work/ educational experience.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience within the front-line social service sector.
  • Knowledge of Harm Reduction work, community development, and systemic barriers for marginalized people in accessing gainful employment.
  • Experience working with and supervising peer workers or people with lived experience.
  • Experience with program development and group facilitation will be an asset.
  • A progressive understanding of the pervasive systemic barriers that keep people in poverty and or houseless; committed to equity and social justice.
  • Exceptional understanding or trauma informed practice, strength-based community building and issues that impact people who live in poverty.
  • A deep understanding of the benefits of Harm Reduction Work and systemic barriers that impact drug users and people with disabilities from finding gainful employment.
  • Previous experience with intensive case management, supervising and scheduling Harm Reductions or volunteers.
  • Understanding of Social inclusion and the benefits of lived experience as essential to community-based programming.
  • Strong ability to mentor and exchange knowledge with sound judgement and strong decision-making skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong ability to exchange knowledge.
  • Demonstrated capacity to operate under pressure.
  • Creative problem solving and organizational skills; able to coordinate multiple tasks and issues through prioritizing, delegation and follow through on deadlines.
  • Able to work in a quickly changing and expanding program requiring flexibility and multi-tasking skills.
  • Personal experience as a Harm Reduction Worker or lived experience of homelessness, addictions and mental health will be considered an asset.
  • Strong verbal and written English language communication skills; fluency in additional languages, relevant to the communities of service, will be considered an asset.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with personnel at all levels across multiple programs/areas.
  • Ability to develop and maintain excellent relations with community organizations, networks and funders.
  • Self-directed and independent, as well as proven experience in working effectively as an inter-disciplinary team member and in collaboration with other community professionals.
  • Must be qualified to work in Canada legally for the employer.
  • Able to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening check with a ‘Clear’ or satisfactory result that meets the operational requirements of the Agency.
  • Must have up-to-date vaccinations against COVID-19 with a vaccine that has been approved for use in Canada.
