What you'll do for CNIB Deafblind Community Services

A Specialist, Skills Development provides literacy instruction to individuals who are Deafblind, blind, and partially sighted. This position covers a broad range of duties and responsibilities, including:

· Conducts initial intake and assessment of new learners and designs individual training plans.

· Responsible for recruitment, training, and supervision of placement students.

· Participates in and supports public awareness activities.

· Drafts government reports and proposals for funding.

· Acts as a resource for DBCS staff members and third-party community partners.

· Maintains contact with the literacy community, especially those that relate to Deafblindness.

· Updates and maintains accurate electronic learner files and monitors statistical reports to maintain contractual targets.

· Maintains the ministry client management system (CAMS).

· Initiates and maintains resources and materials appropriate for Deafblind/blind/partially sighted learners.

· Provides general information with regards to literacy programs.

· Responsible for recruiting and training learners.

Relationships

· Develops and maintains professional working relationships with learner base.

· Develops and maintains good working relationships with professionals in various literacy agencies and organizations.

· Maintains and reports all activity records to third party funding agencies.

· Educates and promotes literacy objectives to CNIB and VLRC staff.

· Participates constructively as a member of the multi-disciplinary team.

· Acts as a consultant to the professional and service community regarding issues of the Deafblind community.

· Constructively collaborates with learners in the process of self-evaluation, works with learners to make necessary adjustments to ensure literacy goals are met.

Problem Solving

· Maintains accurate, professional case records of learner’s progress.

· Communicates in a professional manner, written and verbally, including voice mail, correspondence, and external community meetings.

· Remains current on agency policies, community resources, and materials and technology related to literacy instruction.

· Provides timely delivery of appropriate services for development of a literacy program plan.

· Ability to creatively and quickly problem solve to respond to unique individual needs.

· Participates in service evaluation and planning processes as needed to maintain and improve service standards.

· Excellent interpersonal and organization skills.

· Decision Autonomy

· This position has latitude in making decisions about learner assessments, instruction, and program planning.

· Utilizes judgement when recommending services to the individual and refers to other community partners when required.

· This position works with private and confidential material.

Leadership

· Takes initiative to keep up to date on new literacy processes and trends.

· Provides leadership in training and coaching students and staff whenever required.

· Facilitate and enhance team efforts on a professional level and share specialized knowledge, sources, experience, concepts, and skills.

Requirements

Who you are

· Experience working with people with exceptional needs

· Ability to adjust instruction strategies to meet the needs of the learner.

· Experience or a willingness to learn and practice alternate formats of communications considered an asset, including Two-Hand Manual, American Sign Language, Fingerspelling, Braille, etc.

· Excellent computer skills to maintain records, research learner data, and write reports.

· Good working knowledge of OALCF and EOIS-CaMs.

· Strong organizational skills with the ability to adapt to changing situations.

· Well-developed communication skills.

· Strong attention to detail and ability to multi-task.

· Possess strong interpersonal and diplomacy skills.

· Demonstrate strong ethical behaviours and ability in maintaining confidentiality.

· Ability to work well with others in a team environment.

· Possess a mature and professional demeanor.
