Director, Emergency Management Unit (Senior Manager 2)

Reporting to the Executive Director, Health Protection Branch, the Director provides strategic direction, leadership and supports development of health emergency management plans. This position manages implementation, including integration of emergency preparedness and response activities within Alberta Health, the province and across Canada. This position plays a leadership role in representing Alberta Health on multiple Provincial, Territorial, and Federal initiatives addressing emergency management pillars. Leading the Emergency Management Unit team to be successful in reaching goals, supporting staff development, and maintaining readiness are important factors as Director. Using your highly developed communication skills, you will facilitate effective, collaborative, working relationships with internal and external partners. Your strong leadership skills and your proven ability to work strategically as a member of a team will ensure your success in this position. Your exceptional organizational and critical thinking skills are essential in this key role.

Responsibilities will require you to:

Develop strategic policy and program advice for senior officials (Executive Director, Assistant Deputy Minister, Deputy Minister). Create, implement, and evaluate business continuity, emergency preparedness, and pandemic plans using an “all hazards” approach. Oversee projects related to government planning initiatives. Represent Alberta Health at the Provincial Emergency Coordination Centre (PECC) to ensure key public health elements are included. Coordinate and lead cross-government initiatives focused on emergency planning and preparedness. Establish and strengthen stakeholder relationships for joint and integrated projects, identifying and leveraging opportunities for effective collaborative partnerships to resolve issues. Develop communication and stakeholder engagement strategies to support preparedness and address social, environmental, and economic challenges. Manage competing priorities and sensitive public health issues while addressing unit-related issues (human resources, issues management, communications, financial, and business planning). Analyze research information to improve decision-making and identify areas for further study. Mentor, coach, and supervise staff, including managers and program services positions.
