The Public Health Division provides strategic direction and leadership through the assessment, development and implementation of provincial policies, regulations, strategies, and standards in the areas of communicable diseases, immunization, compliance monitoring, environmental public health, health promotion, and emergency preparedness, response and recovery.

The division carries out these functions to support innovation and engagement with Albertans in wellness, health promotion, harm reduction, as well as injury and disease prevention. The Health Protection Branch oversees, leads and supports the development, implementation and review of legislation, standards, guidelines and policies to protect public health. Health Protection staff follow current issues/trends and support research into emerging and existing environmental and infection control and infectious disease public health concerns (e.g., climate change, air borne contaminants, hospital and community acquired infections) to understand these issues and the impacts they may have for public health. The Branch also coordinates the emergency planning and response efforts of the health sector for the department for emergency events (e.g., wildfires, pandemic influenza, business disruptions and flood).

**Role**:

The Environmental Public Health Advisor plays a crucial role in supporting Alberta Health's efforts to safeguard public health through environmental public health initiatives. The incumbent is responsible for providing technical expertise and support in the development and maintenance of policies, guidelines, standards, and legislation related to various environmental public health topics, including food safety, drinking water safety, recreational water safety, and others. The role involves collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, such as Alberta Health Services and other government departments, to identify and address public health issues proactively.

The main responsibilities of the position are as follows:

- Contributing to policy development: The incumbent provides expertise and advice in developing and revising environmental public health regulations, offers input on policies, and collaborates with stakeholders to ensure compliance with the Public Health Act.
- Influencing strategic planning: The position involves leading or participating in cross-government initiatives and committees, providing policy advice to key stakeholders, and building positive working relationships with various partners to maximize the impact of public health efforts.
- Offering leadership and advice: The incumbent provides technical guidance and support to various stakeholders, including the department, Minister, Legislature members, and other government departments, on public health policy issues.

- Assisting others within the branch and division: The incumbent leads and participates in committees, conducts research, prepares various documents, and applies public health knowledge to review and respond to plans and reports.
