The Public Health Division provides strategic direction and leadership through the assessment, development and implementation of provincial policies, regulations, strategies, and standards in the areas of communicable diseases, immunization, compliance monitoring, environmental public health, health promotion, and emergency preparedness, response and recovery.

The division carries out these functions to support innovation and engagement with Albertans in wellness, health promotion, harm reduction, as well as injury and disease prevention. To support health system quality, the division collaborates with partners in compliance and monitoring activities and enforcement of the acts, regulations and standards administered by the division regarding physician billing, continuing care accommodations and health services, infection prevention and control, and protection for persons in care.

The Health Protection Branch oversees, leads and supports the development, implementation and review of legislation, standards, guidelines and policies to protect public health. Health Protection staff follow current issues/trends and support research into emerging and existing environmental public health concerns (e.g., climate change, air borne contaminants, hospital and community acquired infections) to understand these issues and the impacts they may have for public health. The Branch also coordinates the emergency planning and response efforts of the health sector for the department for emergency events (e.g., pandemic influenza, business disruptions and flood), infection control, Indigenous Health, and Audit and Compliance Assurance. The Environmental Public Health Science Unit focuses on any and all aspects of the natural and built environment that may affect human health. Many times the work of the team examines the intersections of how hazards in the air, water, food and soil can lead to health impacts now, today, tomorrow and throughout the lifetime of a person.

Alberta Health is looking to fill a Manager position on the Environmental Public Health Science team within our Health Protection Branch. The manager will also provide expert project and issue management leadership to members of the Environmental Public Health Science team, the Health Protection Branch and work with the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health, Alberta Health Services, and other affiliated stakeholders both inside and outside of the health sector (e.g., Alberta Environment & Parks, Alberta Innovates, Environment Climate Change).
This position will have the opportunity to use a cooperative approach to design and strengthen Alberta Health's collaborative working relationships and partnerships with key stakeholders (e.g., federal/provincial/municipal departments and agencies, First Nation and Métis stakeholders, industry groups, and the public) focused on the scientific and social issues connected with environmental public health science.
