Reporting to the Infrastructure Manager, the DPT (Development and Planning Technologist) determines and enforces setback requirements for developments; presents the department’s position in the application and interpretation of the relevant parts of the Acts, Legislations and Regulations surrounding the protection of the highway corridors thereby preventing future costs associated with improvements to the highway system due to unregulated development and minimizes the Department’s exposure to risk of litigation.

The DPT interacts with various clients such as landowners, commercial business operators, developers, urban & rural municipal governments and administrations, utility owners, contractors, various levels of government boards, federal, provincial government departments, and the general and motoring public.

The main responsibilities for the DPT are (but not limited to):

The DPT acts as the Minister’s representative for day-to-day activities in Issuing Roadside Development Permits for highway vicinity developments. For example, permits for all utility installations and review application for private sign installations. Reviews Planning referrals for land use re-designation, subdivisions and development permit applications, Subdivision proposals, Area structure plans, participates in the preparation of highway planning documents etc. The incumbent performs the activities related to highway right-of way, field inspections, sign approvals, traffic accommodation strategies, testing & monitoring safety hazardous and review request for special events. The DPT reviews internal and external requests regarding road closures and property dispositions to ensure no property is left without public access, that there is no adverse impact on the provincial highway system, and proper procedures are followed. The Development & Planning Technologist maintains a professional level of contact with stakeholders, attend public meetings and open houses, prepares Action Requests through briefing notes using tact and diplomacy under the provided guidelines.
