Role Responsibilities

The Director - Preventive Programs & Strategic Partnerships, provides leadership, direction, policy insight and oversight to the provincial response for a diverse number of government priorities including prevention of family violence, sexual violence, abuse and other related programs and strategic initiatives. The Director provides oversight to the secretariat that supports the Family Violence Death Review Committee and Chairs the Interdepartmental Committee on Family Violence. The Director provides policy supports to the review and development of family violence, sexual violence, and abuse policy suites.

The Director plans, creates and leads cross-ministry, community, and academic partners including family violence prevention, the prevention of sexual violence and the prevention of abuse. This position also oversees the development of data collection and measurement strategies to lead the evaluation of existing and new family violence and women's shelter grants provided to civil society organizations. This may include grant implementation as needed to support strategic partnerships. The Director is responsible to provide a prevention and policy `lens'/perspective to the development of other related programs and strategic initiatives through leadership on cross-ministry ministry committees and working groups. 

Within these priority areas, the Director is accountable for policy and legislation development, development and refinement of government frameworks and action plans at various stages of development related to preventive programs. 

This position has significant responsibilities and accountabilities for (but not limited to):

Leading the development, implementation, evaluation, measurement and monitoring of precedent-setting provincial prevention and intervention program addressing root issues related to family violence, sexual violence, abuse, and other complex social challenges. Establishing and maintaining strategic, collaborative partnerships with all levels of government, community organizations, academia, and other internal and external stakeholders. Provides expert advice and resulting recommendations related to applicable legislation, prevention program and understanding prevention strata and perspectives, as needed within the ministry and across the government.  Highlight the importance of prevention in risk mitigation solutions to complex social problems, and conduct knowledge translation and education activities within the public service.  Champion and provide strategic leadership to the mandate of the Family Violence Death Review Committee FVDRC) and ensure that recommendations from this committee are provided to cross-ministry and intra-ministry partners to effect change and prevent future family violence deaths within Alberta. Provide leadership, direction, and guidance to a team of management and professional staff in support of staff reaching their full potential.

The position provides leadership to a team of management and professional staff performing varied and specialized work relating to legislation, policy development, research, program development and implementation, program evaluation, measurement and monitoring, investigations/case file reviews, grant management, public awareness, education, stakeholder consultation and other coordinated and collaborative community initiatives.
