Description

One of the key roles of the NWT Literacy Council is to provide support to build community capacity to deliver and sustain local literacy programs and services. Our services are guided by the principles of community development and local ownership that reflect the literacy needs of the community.

This position provides an opportunity to build skills and experience while supporting family-centered, literacy programs in the community. Under the supervision of the Executive Director and Project Specialists, the Program Assistant is responsible for a variety of administrative and hands-on tasks that help meet literacy needs, build local skills, provide relevant resources and tools and provide ongoing support.

Responsibilities

Family Literacy Programming Support : Collaborate with program staff to facilitate family literacy sessions. Assist in preparing materials and setting up activities for literacy programs. Engage with families to encourage participation and provide support during sessions. Bison Bus Mobile Family Literacy Visits : Support logistics and execution of the Bison Bus visits to remote communities. Assist in organizing and distributing educational materials during visits. Help conduct literacy activities, storytelling sessions, and interactive games on the bus. Special Event Assistance : Participate in planning and organizing special literacy events. Support events such as Dolly Parton Imagination Library book distributions and community festivals like Old Town Ramble and Ride. Assist with event setup, coordination, and breakdown. Creation of Learning Materials : Work with program staff to design and produce learning materials tailored to different age groups. Ensure materials are engaging, educational, and accessible to diverse audiences. Maintain an inventory of materials and replenish supplies as needed. Hosting Outdoor Literacy Activities : Plan and facilitate outdoor literacy activities, including scavenger hunts and reading circles. Engage children and families in interactive and educational outdoor experiences. Ensure the safety and enjoyment of participants during outdoor activities. Outdoor Programming in Yellowknife : Assist in the implementation of various outdoor programs in Yellowknife. Support community gardening projects, picnics, and other outdoor literacy initiatives. Foster a positive and inclusive environment for all participants. Administrative Support : Maintain accurate records of program participation and feedback. Assist with data entry, reporting, and documentation as required. Help manage scheduling and logistics for programs and events. Community Engagement : Build positive relationships with community members and stakeholders. Promote literacy programs and events through outreach and engagement activities. Support the development of partnerships with local organizations and groups.

Qualifications

Skills and abilities

Solid understanding of literacy development issues in the NWT; Ability to relate to youth and youth issues; Strong facilitation, consultation and team building skills; Ability to use social media to promote programs; Ability to use computer presentation programs; Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Excellent interpersonal skills to deal with individuals and groups with varying interests and backgrounds; Experience working in cross-cultural settings; Solid understanding of and commitment to participatory community development approaches; Strong research skills; Ability to develop and maintain a team approach among individuals and groups to achieve common goals; Ability to travel, sometimes extensively.

Education and Experience

Currently enrolled in or recently completed a post-secondary program in Education, Early Childhood Development, Social Work, or a related field. Or, secondary students with an interest in a future career in Education, Early Childhood or Social Work. Demonstrated interest in literacy and education. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively in a team environment. Creative, adaptable, and proactive in problem-solving. Comfortable working outdoors and engaging with children of various ages. Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to remote communities. First Aid certification is an asset.

Accountability

Ensure that assigned tasks and responsibilities are completed accurately and on time. Maintain high standards in the preparation of materials, organization of events, and interaction with program participants. Accurately document program participation, feedback, and any issues that arise, reporting these to the Program Coordinator. Communicate effectively with program staff and other team members, providing updates on progress and any challenges encountered. Ensure the safety and active engagement of all program participants, particularly during outdoor activities and events. Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and a positive attitude in all interactions with colleagues, participants, and community members.

Environment

Requires travel to remote communities within the Northwest Territories. Involves outdoor work and physical activities related to event setup and participation May require flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate program schedules. Job requires considerable sensitivity to local community and cultural factors; When not traveling, normal office working conditions in Yellowknife;
