Role Responsibilities

The Food Processing Development Centre (FPDC) and the Agrivalue Processing Business Incubator (APBI) are operational food production facilities designed to meet the processing needs of Alberta food companies.

The Director of Operations is responsible for providing strategic leadership, planning, and management of the FPDC and APBI. This role involves integrating these facilities to ensure that their programs and services align with industry needs and the ministry's mandate. The Director will develop strategic policies to ensure smooth plant operations, maintain federal registrations, and maximize the economic impact of Alberta's value-added food processing industry.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and Strategic Direction:

Develop and implement strategic policies to ensure efficient plant operations and maintain federal registrations. Provide strategic direction to clients and tenants, ensuring programs and services meet industry needs. Collaborate with industry, regulatory agencies, interdepartmental teams, and staff to maximize economic impact.


Program and Facility Management:

Lead the assessment, development, and implementation of agricultural processing technologies. Manage the commercialization and marketing of new agricultural-based products. Maintain effective partnerships with infrastructure, property management, finance, legal, and risk management teams. Guide and coach APBI tenants to ensure compliance with Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) regulations and efficient operations.


Client and Industry Engagement:

Promote Alberta's agricultural processing industry locally, nationally, and internationally. Build and maintain relationships with industry associations, manufacturers, universities, and research centers. Attract and support entrepreneurs and food processing companies.


Technology and Innovation:

Investigate and assess new processing technologies. Lead the acquisition and installation of new technology and equipment. Leverage external funding to support technological advancements.


Economic Impact:

Drive the development and production of diverse value-added products. Encourage the diversification of the food industry and promote Alberta's value-added goods globally. Coordinate access to funding, legal, and marketing resources for tenants.


Team Leadership:

Foster a work environment that values staff, encourages continuous learning, and achieves excellent performance. Provide clear direction and resources to support staff development and key results.


Complex Issue Management:

Resolve issues related to the use of APBI and FPDC programs and facilities. Apply strategic thinking to achieve business goals and identify innovative solutions.


Impact and Accountability:

Ensure the development and adoption of new technologies for high-value product manufacturing. Facilitate the establishment of new companies and the growth of existing ones. Liaise with industry stakeholders to build Alberta's processing capacity and pursue new opportunities.

Qualifications

University graduation in a related field, preferably in Food Safety, Food Science, Business or Commerce Plus, seven (7) years related experience. 


Equivalencies maybe considered - directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or  1 year of experience for 1 year of education


Preferences will be given to those with direct experience in a food processing facility.

Assets to be successful in the role:

Knowledge and experience in the meat and/or dairy industry. Technical knowledge in inspection processes, slaughter, animal welfare, and meat processing. Knowledge of food safety principles for food processing, meat slaughter, and meat and dairy processing. Familiarity with applicable legislation, regulations, and guidelines including the ability to interpret regulatory standards (e.g., Meat Inspection Act (AB), Meat Inspection Regulation (AB), Livestock Identification and Commerce Act, Meat Facility Standards, etc.). Robust competencies in communication and conflict resolution (e.g. Verbal Judo). Strategic thinking and planning competencies with the ability to translate into operational plans.  Training and/or experience in Incident Command Systems and emergency response.
