Job Summary

The Digital Communications and Project Assistant will play a crucial role in supporting the dynamic and evolving Mother Tree Project, along with related sustainable forest management research. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a program that is rapidly expanding, with an increasing number of team members and initiatives. The incumbent will assist in enhancing the Mother Tree Project's brand, which includes strengthening its digital presence, creating compelling content for multiple online platforms, and effectively communicating research outcomes to foster positive community engagement in line with the project's research and teaching objectives.

Working closely with the Mother Tree Project's Senior Management, Media Relations, and Coordinator, the assistant will contribute to the program's growing communications and research efforts, as well as its fundraising initiatives.

Job End Date is February 15, 2025 (to be reviewed two months in advance for possible extension).

Organizational Status
Reporting to the Mother Tree Project Senior Manager, Media Relations, the incumbent works independently on most tasks, seeking guidance from the coordinator with new or complex issues.

Work Performed

  • Assist with organizing and scheduling video production, basic video editing, and posting news updates on the Suzanne Simard and Mother Tree Project websites.
  • Maintain and archive digital content, ensuring materials are properly categorized and accessible.
  • Format documents, maintain directories, and prepare communications for meetings.
  • Support the development and upkeep of procedural guidelines and assist in maintaining image libraries.
  • Draft responses for inquiries related to the Mother Tree Project.
  • Assist in organizing donor research, coordinating fundraising materials, and supporting various campaign efforts.
  • Track and report monthly demographic statistics.
  • Utilize templates to create visual materials for reports and presentations.
  • Aid in maintaining the Mother Tree Project's social media presence.
  • Monitor digital channels and contribute to issue management.
  • Perform other general administrative tasks as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The nature of the work demands planning the sequence of duties, the work methods to be employed, and the action to be taken, often on unusual problems. The incumbent requires independent judgment, tact, discretion, and initiative, based upon a thorough knowledge of procedures, guidelines, and regulations. Errant decisions or communications could have a serious impact on operations and the reputation of the department and University.

Supervision Received
The individual reports directly to the Mother Tree Project Senior Manager, Media Relations and receives routine direction from the Mother Tree Project Communications Coordinator.

Minimum Qualifications
High School graduation, plus one year of related training, plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree and related experience
  • In depth knowledge and understanding of social media platforms (YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn etc.) and their respective audiences and how they can be deployed
  • Preference for experience in photography and videography
  • Working knowledge of design software including Canva and Adobe Creative Suite and familiarity with basic design principles
  • Proven ability of assimilating, analyzing and presenting information to a variety of audiences
  • Preference for candidates with moderate to advanced skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email, and WordPress, and the ability to apply these tools effectively to complex tasks
  • Effective oral and written communication, prioritizing, multi-tasking, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently, diplomatically, and collaboratively with diverse individuals.
  • Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail
