Environmental Laboratory Sample Logistics Supervisor
Bureau Veritas Laboratories is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Environmental Laboratory Sample Logistics Supervisor to join our team. As a key member of our laboratory operations, you will be responsible for leading a team of professionals in ensuring the efficient and effective management of laboratory samples.
About the Role:
- Supervise laboratory staff in the receipt, inspection, and distribution of laboratory samples.
- Develop and implement processes to maximize human, equipment, and financial resources.
- Ensure quality client services in sample inspection, sample login, distribution of samples into the lab, and sample archiving.
- Maintain a good working environment in the laboratory to meet employee satisfaction in terms of safety, training, recognition, and empowerment.
- Work closely with the Manager to pursue the organization's strategic objectives and make recommendations for long-term improvements of operations and policies.
Key Accountabilities:
- Lead and develop staff, including recruitment, setting objectives, evaluating performance, coaching, and mentoring.
- Coordinate work schedules, workloads, and monitor the status of various work areas throughout the day.
- Ensure accurate and timely execution of sample inspection, sample entry, delivery, and sample management practices to meet client requirements.
- Participate in sample inspection, sample login, delivery of samples into the lab, archiving samples, and sample management as needed.
- Monitor and evaluate functional performance of team members, conduct regular coaching sessions, and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Develop and monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure individual and team effectiveness.
- Provide clear direction, coaching, and support to team members to ensure efficient, effective, and professional client interactions.
- Review, streamline, and develop/update departmental processes and work instructions to ensure a high-level "customer experience" and maximize team efficiencies.
- Monitor sample logistics accuracy rates and work with staff to improve performance and recommend process efficiency improvements.
- Coordinate requests or recommend resource planning, such as additional staff or equipment.
- Develop strategic plans to prepare the department for continued growth.
- Provide feedback during the budgeting process as required.
- Elevate significant and complex resource issues to the Manager.
- Provide Management with production and statistical reports.
- Conduct and participate in meetings to share departmental information, address concerns, and obtain ideas for problem resolution and improvements.
- Develop and nurture ongoing relationships with peers in other internal departments and customers.
- Develop and maintain a positive work environment for employees.
- Support and comply with all Bureau Veritas policies, Quality System, and Health & Safety program.
- Responsible for generating, maintaining, and updating SOPs and work instructions.
- Ensure employees follow SOPs and work to reduce non-conformances.
- Provide information, instructions, and assistance to all staff to protect their health and safety.
- Understand and enforce our EHS Policy and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Provide all staff with proper, well-maintained equipment and special personal protective devices as required.
- Conduct safety tailgate meetings with staff regularly.
- Conduct weekly PPE audits.
- Participate in monthly worksite inspections of their area.
- Ensure hazard assessments and critical task analysis are done within their area of responsibility.
- Monitor staff and hold them accountable for their individual safety performance.
- Ensure compliance with Transport of Dangerous Goods regulations and adequate training of staff.
- Participate in internal and external audits as requested.
- Maintain training records and relevant qualifications.
- All other responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements:
- Post-secondary school education (B.Sc. preferred) with at least 5 years' experience in the environmental industry.
- At least 3 years of Team Leader or Supervisory experience.
- Reliable, responsible, and motivated individual capable of establishing priorities and leading a team.
- Ability to coach, mentor, and motivate staff.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills with Lab Operations and the Customer Service Team.
- Ability to assess problems, recommend, and provide alternative solutions.
- Positive outlook with ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Good time-management, communication, multi-tasking, and priority setting skills.
- Excellent written communication and ability to display data and information using Microsoft Office.
- Ability to adapt to a changing environment.
- Detail-oriented and record-keeping skills.
- Ability to accurately follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and work instructions.
- Ability to learn quickly.
- Represent the Bureau Veritas values and are at all times professional.
