Job Description Summary
The Graduate Practice Placement Coordinator co-ordinates all clinical practice placements in consultation with the course and program leadership in the School in graduate programs and visiting international research students. The incumbent engages in activities to support current placement experiences as well as those to create new opportunities. The Graduate Practice Placement Coordinator also supports clinical academic practice program development on and off site. In addition, the incumbent supervises systems for the effective tracking of clinical practice experiences in the program and participates in required clinical academic program activities to support the implementation and further development of tools to manage practice placements.

Organizational Status
The School of Nursing operates as an independent unit within the Faculty of Applied Science and prepares graduates for direct entry to nursing practice. As a degree-granting program for a distinct health profession, the undergraduate program is responsible for its own admissions and selections process, and must be consistent with preparatory, regulatory and certification guidelines specified by the College of Registered Nurses of BC.

This position reports administratively to the Manager, Clinical Practice Placement Unit (CPPU), and functionally to the Associate Director, Graduate Programs and works closely with the graduate program leadership team, faculty, other members of the CPPU team, clinical preceptors and students to provide appropriate practice experiences and related placement guidelines. The Graduate Placement Coordinator also liaises and troubleshoots with hospital, community health agencies, health authorities and community-based practitioners to ensure excellent, appropriate and safe clinical practice experiences for students in the School in graduate programs, as well as visiting international research students. This position also works collaboratively with the Student Services Team at the School of Nursing.

Work Performed

- Coordinates the resolution of complex clinical practice based placement issues in conjunction with faculty teaching practice based courses.

- Assists in the development of marketing plans for recruitment of placements and practice partners in program areas.

- Works closely with the graduate program leadership team on the quality and content of clinical practice experiences for students.

- Inter-city travel will be required for off-site visits and meetings

- Performs other related duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Ineffective relations and negotiations with hospital, community health agencies, Health Authorities, community-based clinicians and clinical preceptors would result in inadequate or insufficient clinical learning opportunities for the undergraduate students, which in turn would impact the effectiveness of the School s program, impair critical opportunities for learning and/or compromise the School s reputation for elite standing among nursing schools in Canada.

Judgment, reliability, accuracy, and skilled communications are required for the timely arrangement of clinical groups, particularly in placing students who have experienced challenges in the practice setting in collaboration with the course/practice leaders. Judgment, accuracy, and skilled communications are required in responding to the multiple faculty requests for standard rotational placements and some alternate placements. Judgment is necessary in prioritizing the multiple and varied placements required.

In the clinical placement context, errors in judgment would also have an impact on the clinical performance of nursing students in providing safe care for patients, and in maintaining placement partnerships.

Supervision Received
This position reports administratively to the Manager, Clinical Practice placement Unit (CPPU), and works independently under direction of the graduate program leadership team in the management of their tasks. The incumbent works in close collaboration with and receives instructions (as needed) from the graduate Practice Course Leaders.
