About the Opportunity

We are seeking a skilled Health Information Specialist to join our team at Nova Scotia Health Authority. As a key member of our health information management team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of patient health information.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing accurate coding and abstraction of inpatient, day surgery, and emergency health information. This will involve working closely with our clinical teams to ensure that patient data is collected and reported in a timely and accurate manner.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide accurate coding and abstraction of patient health information
  • Work closely with clinical teams to ensure data accuracy and integrity
  • Monitor data quality and prepare submissions for CIHI and other specialty programs
  • Contribute to quality, patient safety, decision making, and planning of health care services

Requirements:

  • Successful completion of a 2-3 year diploma from a recognized Canada Health Information Management Association recognized program
  • Certified with the Canadian College of Health Information Management and hold active certified membership in good standing with Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA)
  • Knowledge of National and Provincial legislation and NSHA/Area policies that govern Confidentiality, Privacy, and security of health information
  • 2 years of coding experience in the health information management field
  • Commitment to ongoing learning and professional development
  • Current knowledge of data collection standards, including Canadian Institute of Health Information standards
  • Knowledge of health information systems, including 3M, Discharge Abstract Database, National Ambulatory Care Reporting System, and ADT system (MEDITECH/STAR)
