The expected pay for this position is $70,000 per year.

JOB SUMMARY
The Research Associate is responsible for conducting research, leading research projects, contributing to manuscript and grant development, and providing direction and expert advice to staff and trainees in the Levings lab at the BC Children's Hospital Research Institute. They will contribute to reporting on project progress and deliverables to funders.
ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS
The UBC Faculty of Medicine Department of Surgery educates students at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels, and pursues research to make innovative advancements in knowledge and practice to improve health. The Department consists of more than 600 physicians, surgeons, scientists and educators and over 70 administrative, research and technical staff, distributed across British Columbia. There are nine divisions in the following specialties: Cardiac Surgery, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Thoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery. The Department is also home to the Branch for Global Surgical Care (BGSC).
The Research Associate reports directly to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Megan Levings. The incumbent liaises with staff and trainees in the Levings lab, Core Facilities at BC Children's Hospital Research Institute, and collaborating labs at UBC and beyond. The Research Associate supports, trains and provides functional direction to Undergraduate, Graduate, and Postgraduate students as well as other staff working in the lab.
WORK PERFORMED
- Establish, implement and lead research projects, including designing, performing and interpreting experiments related to CAR-Treg therapy.
- Create project plans, including milestones; monitors progress to ensure that project priorities and timelines are met.
- Critically review the literature on a regular basis and adapt research questions and experimental design accordingly.
- Direct the generation and analysis of research data, and coordinate presentation of complex data in meetings, conferences and publications.
- Analyze data in a timely fashion and adjust experiments as appropriate.
- Liaise with other academic and industrial collaborators to report on the project.
- Collaborate with other team members to write grants.
- Advise staff and trainees on experimental techniques, design and standard operating procedures.
- Train undergraduate and graduate students in performing experiments and provide direction with associated tasks.
- Adhere to lab standards for documentation, data storage, inventory management.
- Performs other responsibilities, as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The position is based in a laboratory at the translational research building at BCCHR.
CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR/JUDGEMENT
The incumbent may have access to confidential data. The quality of work performed will determine the success of future projects and funding. Exercising poor judgment and lack of appropriate consultation with research team members and supervisors can adversely affect the viability and validity of research projects or programs, and may compromise the UBC Division's and Department's ability to secure grant-based funding for future research projects.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
The Research Associate reports directly to the Principal Investigator Dr. Levings.
SUPERVISION GIVEN
No formal supervision, however the incumbent will train and act as a resource for faculty, staff, and students on specific techniques, procedures and processes.
QUALIFICATIONS
The following qualifications, skills and knowledge, are required:
- PhD in Molecular Biology, Biomedicine and Clinical Research, or relevant discipline plus a minimum of 5 years' related experience is required.
- Up-to-date experience in research performing relevant techniques including T cell isolation, genetic modification and cell culture, flow cytometry and cell sorting, molecular biology, and in vitro and in vivo models of transplantation.
- At least 5 years' experience working with T cell immunology in the context of transplantation.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including additional hours on weekends, evenings and early mornings.
- Excellent organization skills, along with an outstanding level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Good skills and knowledge of molecular biology, flow cytometry and flow sorting panel design, troubleshooting and data analysis.
- Computer experience required (word processing, spreadsheet and data analysis software preferred).
- Ability to exercise tact, discretion and confidentiality.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize work, multi-task, schedule and meet deadlines.
- Ability to actively listen and probe for information to clarify complex requests.
- Effective oral and written communications, with the ability to compose clear and grammatically correct science documents.
- Ability to take initiative, anticipate emerging issues and recommend actions to mitigate problems.
