Salary

Minimum salary will be $72,000 per annum, however, candidates that possess full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position will be offered a higher salary.

This position is located within a health-care facility, therefore, the successful candidate will be required to provide verification of full vaccination against Covid-19 provided prior to the start date, as required by a provincial health mandate.

This offer is conditional upon successful completion of a Criminal Record Check.

The UBC Department of Pediatrics based at the BC Children's Hospital Research Institute, invites applications for a Research Associate at 1.0 FTE to join the BC Injury Research and Prevention Unit.

The BC Injury Research and Prevention Unit ) has contributed to the understanding and prevention of unintentional and intentional injury in British Columbia and beyond. BCIRPU has become a leader through its many partnerships and collaborations among provincial, national and international groups. The mission of BCIRPU is to reduce the societal and economic burden of injury among all age groups in BC. BCIRPU is situated, and supported by the Evidence to Innovation at the BC Children's Hospital Research Institute, the Provincial Health Services Authority/BC Centre for Disease Control, the BC Ministry of Health and the University of British Columbia.

We are looking for a motivated and talented individual to join our team as a Research Associate. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development and management of grant-funded research at the BC Injury Research and Prevention Unit. Responsibilities include coordinating all project activities, collaborating with the Director to establish strategic priorities, and planning, developing, and executing projects to advance research excellence. This role aims to fulfill the unit's mandate in injury prevention surveillance, research, training, public information dissemination, and coordination across British Columbia and beyond.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will play a leadership role at the BCIRPU, providing oversight on injury prevention surveillance and research, and training aspects of the unit while leading their own scientific projects.

Specifics tasks for this position may include:

  • Leadership role in advancing injury prevention research
  • Provides counsel and guidance to the Director
  • Assisting with the designing and implementation of new research projects
  • Managing and running projects
  • Overseeing and leading trainees within projects
  • Presenting research findings at conferences and related research events
  • Preparing and leading the development of content for academic manuscripts, technical reports, research proposals, and presentations
  • Identifies and fosters strategic partnership opportunities and manages current partnerships
  • Oversee and coordinates all aspects of participant recruitment: ethics, agreements, logistics, study awareness promotion, participant enrollment, obtaining informed consent, data collection
  • Training and mentoring lab personnel
  • Helping to enhance our collaborative research environment
  • Performs other related duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a PhD in a relevant field and a minimum of seven (7) years of research experience
  • An established track record of developing and completing research projects in injury prevention and public health as demonstrated by past publications, accomplishments, and references
  • Demonstrated experience in qualitative research
  • Experience with research in parent/caregivers and risky play
  • Ability to function in a self‐directed manner
  • Excellent ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills with a variety of people
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have >2 years of experience in a postdoctoral role

CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR

The successful applicant will exercise a considerable amount of judgment, responsibility, and initiative in determining work procedures and methods, and coordinating the work of the unit. Poor judgment could result in loss of experimental data and delay in conducting research. This could impact publications, collaborations, and future findings.

Errors and poor decisions could compromise the results of research projects, and therefore could be damaging to the reputation of the Principal Investigator, other investigators, the Unit, the Research Centre, and the University.

Supervision received
The incumbent will receive supervision directly from Dr. Shelina Babul (Director, BCIRPU) and Dr. Ian Pike (Investigator, BCIRPU).

Supervision given
The incumbent will supervise trainees involved in the research program.

Start date
The position will begin as soon as possible. The position is full-time for one year with extension subject to work performance and funding availability.
