Job Summary: Water and Wastewater Operations Specialist

Responsible for the efficient operation and maintenance of water and wastewater systems, ensuring compliance with regulations and minimizing environmental impacts.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Adjusts, inspects, and evaluates processes and equipment to optimize performance, maintain regulatory compliance, and minimize adverse impacts.
  • Operates and monitors the performance of system process equipment, including valves, gates, pumps, compressors, and HVAC systems.
  • Makes process adjustments, operational decisions, and addresses alarm conditions to ensure efficient, compliant, and safe operation.
  • Maintains records and documentation of process and work area activities using manual or computerized systems.
  • Accountable for the efficient operation of water and wastewater systems, personal performance, and promoting optimal team performance.
  • Collects samples, performs laboratory tests, analysis, and calculations, and records results.
  • Interprets laboratory results and makes adjustments as necessary.
  • Identifies changes in operational conditions and implements corrective actions and/or troubleshoots process issues.
  • Utilizes various tools to perform operational duties, including Process Control System (PCS), SCADA systems, Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), and Work Management System (WMS).
  • Performs preventative maintenance diagnostics, routine preventative maintenance duties, and monitors equipment performance.
Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations applicable to water and wastewater facilities.
  • Knowledge of wastewater treatment plant operations, including Activated Sludge process, Digestion, Disinfection, and Nutrient Removal.
  • Knowledge of wastewater collection system operations, including pumping stations, sanitary sewers, and manholes.
  • Knowledge of water treatment plant operations, including flocculation, tube settling clarifiers, dual media filtration, and chemical treatment.
  • Knowledge of water distribution system operations, including water towers, booster stations, and water main flushing.
  • Ability to work with process control automation systems and interpret process information.
  • Ability to alter unit process operations manually or using computerized technology to meet varying conditions.
  • Knowledge of record keeping, sampling techniques, and analytical procedures.
  • General knowledge of basic mechanical and electrical theory and instrumentation.
  • Ability to work safely in water and wastewater facilities, including chemical handling, confined space entry, and personal protective equipment.
  • Basic computer skills, including word processing, email, and spreadsheet software programs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, prepare reports, and maintain accurate records.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work well in a team and continually grow skills.
Physical Demands:
  • 75% walking, 15% standing, 5% sitting, 5% driving.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 55 pounds (25 kgs).
  • Occasional stooping, kneeling, or crouching, and entering confined spaces.
  • May be required to use ladders or stairs.
Licensing Requirements:
  • Valid MECP Water/Wastewater operating certificate(s) and/or licenses as per facility requirements.
Education Requirements:
  • Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Post-secondary education in an Environmental program or Technical Trade (mechanical, electrical, instrumentation) would be an asset.
Work Commitment:
  • 40-hour work week.
  • Work weekends and statutory holidays when required.
  • Work a rotating on-call schedule when required.
  • Respond to provide assistance when required.
Work Hazards:
  • Exposure to possible operations hazards, including fumes, toxic and caustic chemicals, heavy machinery, high pressure, hot or cold work environment temperatures, slippery surfaces, water hazards, and electrical equipment.
