**Term**: 12 month contract

**Schedule**: 37.5 hours per week Monday to Friday *

**Purpose of Position**

This position supports the work of the Research and Technology Department including operation and maintenance of equipment of the Technology Demonstration facility/laboratory, shipping and receiving of all training equipment, pilot testing projects and assisting in the set up and delivery of select hands-on training courses.

The position reports to the Science Team Lead and also receives guidance and/or direction from other Research and Technology staff. This position could be suitable as a post-secondary co-op or placement.

**Key Responsibilities**
- Shipping, receiving, set up and maintenance of Centre equipment and supplies for training delivery, pilot testing and special events. May assist in the delivery of select hands-on training courses.
- Assists in the maintenance and operation of the Technology Demonstration facility, equipment and laboratory.
- Provides assistance and support for Centre pilot testing projects such as conducting sampling and conducting water analysis, preparing data tables and graphs, proofreading and formatting pilot projects documents.

Additional duties may be assigned at the discretion of the position manager. *Weekend work may be required on occasion.

**Knowledge, Education and Training**
A minimum completion of one year in a relevant college diploma or university degree program specializing in water treatment or related environmental or engineering disciplines is required.

In the case of a placement or co-op, an official letter from the college or university certifying enrollment and completion of at least one year in the program will be required.

The incumbent requires knowledge of drinking water treatment principles, methodologies and practices sufficient to understand the various drinking water treatment and delivery processes, and** **the requirements of provincial drinking water legislation, regulations, policies, procedures and guidelines; the _Safe Drinking Water Act, 2002_ and its regulations; drinking water sample collection and analysis.

**Experience**
This position requires a minimum of three (3) months of practical work experience and excellent verbal and written English communication skills.

Strong mechanical skills (e.g. build small piping systems, troubleshoot chemical feed pumps) and good information researching, organizational and analytical skills are required. Position requires the ability to use hand and small power tools and laboratory equipment such as colorimeters and spectrophotometers. Experience conducting bench scale and other drinking water laboratory testing or operating drinking water process units would be an asset.

An equivalent combination of education and experience would be considered.

**Decision-making**
Will complete routine tasks following easily understood procedures and operations. Will work under close guidance of the R&T team.

**Ingenuity and Creativity**
Tasks and responsibilities are covered by standards, precedents and procedures.

**Impact of Action**
This position works under the guidance of the Science Team Lead, Manager of Research and Technology, the Senior Technical Coordinator and other Department staff. Standard operating procedures are well-defined with audits and checks in place.

**Financial Responsibility**
Any purchases made will follow all accounting and procurement procedures and policies including prior approval from the position manager.

**Responsibility for Leadership**
This position does not have direct reports but may train and assist other incumbents to this role as part of the department team.

**Responsibility for Customer Relationships**
This position may be required to respond to or refer client inquiries and will respond to these in a timely manner.

**Communication**
Will have contact with R&T Department and other Centre staff. Outside contact will not typically be required. Tact and courtesy required to obtain and/or exchange information with co-workers.

**Mental Effort**
Attention is required on various phases of work such as during the maintenance and operation of Tech Demo equipment. This position has choice of action (e.g. choice of movement or switching tasks).

**Physical Effort, Disruption and Working Conditions**
The position requires constant periods of sitting to perform desk-based computer tasks. The position may require standing for prolonged periods of time and performing work in awkward positions. The position requires lifting, pulling and pushing of heavy or awkward equipment and material (up to 50 lbs.) and regular use of equipment and tools requiring some degree of skills.

The position normally works routine hours with general control over the pace of work with occasional work outside of normal working hours.
