About the Branch:

Since the Gold Rush of 1898, mining has featured prominently in building and defining the Yukon's economy, shaping its communities, and contributing to its economic development. In the modern-day context, Yukon Government controls and administers its natural resources, including its minerals. The Mineral Resources branch administers the Quartz Mining Act, Placer Mining Act and regulations through the Mining Recorder offices in Whitehorse, Watson Lake, Dawson, and Mayo.

The branch is responsible for the disposition and administration of mineral resources within the Yukon, providing education and outreach on the regulatory regime to support responsible mining land use and mineral planning and development to the mining industry, communities and governments.

About the Position:

The Mineral Resources Branch is responsible for the regulation of a sustainable mining industry in Yukon. As a member of the branch management team, this position is responsible for planning, coordinating, implementing and evaluating a number of program areas including: mining land use operating plans under the Quartz and Placer Mining Acts, environmental and socio-economic assessments, consultation with First Nations and maintenance of relationships with First Nations and stakeholders.

The Mining Lands Supervisor is responsible for planning, implementing, managing and evaluating the administration of the regulatory processes for mineral exploration in Yukon. The incumbent will work with the Manager of Mining Lands to develop policy, procedures and guidance documents. The Mining Lands Supervisor supervises the Mining Lands Coordinator(s) and provides functional direction to district Mining Lands Officers.

Essential Qualifications

  • Degree in Public Administration, Conservation Sciences, Resource Management, or a related field
  • Experience administering resource legislation and/or regulatory processes;
  • Experience developing, delivering, and evaluating programs, strategies, policies, and/or services;
  • Experience building partnerships within and outside of your organization, including the development of successful relationships with First Nations, communities, non-government organizations and other government departments.
  • Experience managing a team, including undertaking performance reviews;
  • Knowledge of Yukon Placer Mining and Quartz Mining Acts as well as the Yukon Environmental and Socioeconomical Assessment Act would be an asset
