**Job Summary**:
The incumbent administers the day-to-day operations of building inspection services to and for the City.

**Duties and Responsibilities**:

- Coordinates the enforcement and administration of minimum standards for construction and occupancy of buildings.
- Inspects building projects for code compliance, specifies remedial action, prepares reports and investigates violations.
- Issues occupancy, final approvals and summary conviction tickets and issues “stop work” orders.
- Reviews and approves building plans and specifications and issues permits.
- Administers the day-to-day Building Inspection functions, under the direction of the Manager Planning and Building Services, preparation and monitoring of the unit’s annual operating and capital budgets.
- Recruits, directs, trains, schedules and appraises the performance of reporting staff. Is authorized to issue verbal reprimands and contributes to higher levels of discipline in accordance with the progressive discipline directive.
- Ensures, so far as is reasonably practicable, that safety procedures and standards are followed by personnel throughout the unit.
- Administers the development, maintenance and implementation of the Building/Plumbing Bylaw and encourages uniform code interpretation.
- Responds to public enquiries and investigates concerns regarding Building/Plumbing Bylaws, some Zoning Bylaw violations and fire loss.
- Acts as a Development Officer.
- Acts as Manager Planning and Development Services as assigned.

This position contains elements necessary for identification and evaluation of the job. The incumbent may be required to perform other related duties.

**Job Requirements**:
**Working Conditions**:
Scheduled to work 8:30 - 4:30 pm Monday to Friday for a 35-hour work week. In office 80% day in winter, 40-50 % in summer. Exposed to extreme temperatures, inclement weather and health hazards when conducting site visits and completing inspections.

**Required Knowledge, Skill and Abilities**:

- Journeyman Certificate in the Construction Trade
- BC Building Inspection Level 3 Certification or equivalent
- (Pre-requisite
- levels 1 & 2) - 42 hrs.
- Standard First Aid /CPR Level C - 16 hours
- Conflict Resolution Courses (Dealing with Anger, Conflict Management and Negotiations Level 1) - 72 hours
- Supervisor Level 3 (Pre-requisite
- levels 1 & 2) - 63 hrs.
- Class 5 Driver’s License
- Previous experience - 8 years progressive experience, at least 3 of which have included responsibility for inspecting large commercial/industrial projects and 3 years at a supervisory level
- On-the-job experience - 1 year
- Due diligence focus, supervisory, conflict resolution, negotiation and interpersonal skills

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
