Visual Arts Technologist

GENERAL STATEMENT

Working in strong collaboration with faculty to achieve curriculum objectives and under the general guidance of the Chair, but without supervision, the Visual Arts Technologist supervises and assists students in safe and secure classroom, studio and workshop environments.

Also demonstrates various technical processes and proper equipment operation and provides other program support functions as needed.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Maintains security of studio and laboratory areas and equipment;
  • Assists faculty in ordering, receiving, storage and distribution of supplies and equipment;
  • Assists in accounting and inventory of supplies and equipment;
  • Maintains booking schedules of studio, laboratory and equipment;
  • Assists in the maintenance of clean and safe working conditions, including the classrooms, studios and storage areas;
  • Ensures that all safety practices are understood, observed and practised by each student;
  • Prepares for each process or technique and resource materials needed;
  • Prepares audio-visual requirements, written materials or other learning aids as needed;
  • In consultation with the department, researches and anticipates technological needs based on strategic planning;
Provides support and demonstrations on proper use and techniques in one or more of the following subject areas:
Graphic Design, Filmmaking & Animation

  • Graphic design using Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premier, AfterEffect, Dreamweaver, Flash and other digital media-related software and hardware;
  • Filmmaking and animation including video and audio editing, as well as pre- and post-production work;
Intermedia, Photography & Printmaking

  • Intermedia such as camcorders, video and audio editing, audio effects and projectors;
  • Photographic classroom, studio, and darkroom processes, photo management and maintenance including equipment and supplies as well as chemical preparations;
  • Printmaking including silk-screening, intaglio printing, and negative output using computers;
Sculpture & Ceramics

  • Wood working, welding, wheel work, hand-building, glaze and clay preparations, kiln loading, raku firing, etc;
Visual Arts Department Computer Support

  • general computing and software support to Visual Arts faculty and students, liaising with ITS;
  • Installs Macintosh software, tutors, troubleshoots and assesses technical problems;
  • Maintains the Mac lab, network, scanners, projectors, and department computers;
  • Performs other related duties similar in scope and complexity.
    Qualifications Bachelor's degree in fine arts and two years of related work experience, six months of which is directly related to fine arts, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Excellent communication skills both oral and written, as well as a strong customer service orientation. Excellent interpersonal skills combined with the ability to work effectively and professionally with students, faculty and other technologists in a collaborative environment supportive of student success.
