About the Job:

The Top Man/Pipe Layer plays a crucial role in the underground construction work for the EVLW LRT project. This position requires a high level of expertise in preparing pipe for laying, ensuring the highest quality of work and adherence to safety protocols.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Implement and adhere to the company's safety policies and Goal Zero program, promoting a culture of safety among employees, sub-contractors, and consultants.
  • Collaborate with the crew to load and unload tools and materials required for the job.
  • Cut pipe using a handheld gas cut off saw, ensuring precise cuts for efficient pipe laying.
  • Use shot measuring devices to find grades and ensure accurate measurements.
  • Check slopes for conformance to ground disturbance requirements using levels or lasers.
  • Communicate grade requirements to equipment operators and assist in measuring while excavation takes place.
  • Lay pipe in the trench according to job specifications, ensuring a high level of quality and attention to detail.
  • Grade and level trench bases using tamping machines and other hand tools.
  • Connect pipe pieces and seal joints using lube, ensuring a secure and watertight seal.
  • Perform maintenance on pipe and replace any pieces needing rehabilitation, extending the lifespan of the pipe.
  • Train and mentor new crew members in pipe laying techniques, promoting knowledge sharing and skill development.
  • Ensure a solid understanding of and comply with the principles of the company's Code of Ethics.
  • Perform other surveying-related duties as required, contributing to the success of the project.
Requirements:
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in municipal work with water and sewage.
  • Knowledge of underground utilities processes and mathematical aptitude.
Working Conditions:
  • Overtime may be required, with flexible scheduling to meet project demands.
  • Work is performed in an outdoor setting, exposing employees to various weather conditions, dust, and asphalt.
  • Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory, including steel-toed boots, gloves, safety glasses, and a safety vest.
  • Must comply with the company's drug and alcohol policy.

Schedule:
  • 12-hour shifts, Monday to Friday
  • Night shifts and overtime may be required
