Overview:

The Top Man/Pipe Layer is responsible for preparing pipe by making necessary cuts for pipe to be laid for track drain in underground construction work for the EVLW LRT project.

Responsibilities:
  • Promote, execute, and adhere to the company’s safety policies and Goal Zero program, and encourage all employees, sub-contractors, and consultants to adopt safety as a culture.
  • Work with the crew to load and unload the tools and materials required for the job.
  • Cut pipe using a handheld gas cut off saw.
  • Find grades by using shot measuring device.
  • Check slopes for conformance to ground disturbance requirements using levels or lasers.
  • Communicate grade requirements to equipment operators and assist in the measuring while the excavation takes places.
  • Lay pipe in the trench according to job specifications.
  • Grade and level trench bases using tamping machines and other hand tools.
  • Connect pipe pieces and seal joints using lube.
  • Perform maintenance on pipe and replace any pieces needing rehabilitation.
  • Train others in pipe layer and provide mentorship to new crew members.
  • Must ensure a solid understanding of and comply with the principles of the company’s Code of Ethics.
  • Other Surveying related duties as required.
Experience and Knowledge:
  • Minimum 1 year experience in municipal work with water and sewage.
  • Knowledge of underground utilities processes.
  • Mathematical aptitude.
Working Conditions:
  • Overtime as required.
  • Work is performed in an outdoor setting which could include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.
  • Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Use of person protection equipment (PPE) is required (including steel-toed boots, gloves, safety glasses, and a safety vest).
  • Must comply with the company's drug and alcohol policy.
