Your role

The CBC's Parliamentary Bureau is looking for an experienced field producer with a proven track record of developing original journalism. You will join the best journalists in the country in a multiplatform bureau. As Canada's national public broadcaster, diversity shapes the content we deliver every day. The field producer in the Parliamentary Bureau must be able to work under intense and constantly evolving deadline pressures to produce journalism for CBC's broadcast and digital platforms. The ideal candidate will work to develop high-impact political stories that resonate beyond the bubble of Parliament Hill and will bring a distinctive life experience, perspective or expertise to the team that will enrich our politics coverage. This is not a 9-to-5 job. Some days may be long and unpredictable, but ultimately your work is high-profile and often featured prominently in the lineups of our flagship shows.

We are looking for a field producer who is innovative and creative and who will challenge us to develop new ways of telling political stories that will reach a broader audience.

The field producer plans, conceives, organizes, develops and produces news items from Ottawa for CBC News. Work must adhere to CBC journalistic and/or program policies, standards and practices and the producer is ultimately responsible for ensuring that this occurs. Nevertheless, there is wide latitude for initiative, independent judgment and creativity. There is a regular and ongoing requirement to coordinate the work of others.

Key Tasks:
  • Conceives and develops program ideas and concepts. Participates in the preparation of program objectives.
  • Conceives, organizes, develops and produces news items for television, radio and online.
  • Develops the program content including assigning, researching, gathering, writing and/or editing. As required, commissions writing and/or research. Prepares scripts.
  • Coordinates resources and reporters covering live events.
  • Exercises editorial responsibility as delegated by management.
  • Evaluates all facets of a production including the performance of program and production personnel and freelance contributors.
  • Writes and packages stories for digital platforms, including online and mobile.
  • Thinks digitally to support and expand the roll out of stories on other platforms, including social media and online.
As required, performs the following tasks:
  • Direct talent, sound and/or image; select, rewrite and/or edit copy or text written by others;
  • Ensure, in collaboration with Copyright Clearance officers or others, the proper and accurate clearance of all material used in the program;
  • Determine the order and importance of various elements of a program; Assign, coordinate and supervise the work of personnel who contribute to the program or segment for which the producer is responsible;
  • Identify, develop and maintain contacts appropriate to the area of assignment;
  • Oversee the shooting, editing, encoding, digitizing and packaging of digital audio and video for online ( ) and social platforms;
  • Package stories or programs for online, including manipulating images and graphics;
  • Take part in and/or support live events
  • Edit and mix, or direct the editing and mixing of audio and/or visual elements;
We are looking for a candidate with the following:
  • University degree or equivalent.
  • Minimum of five years' experience of which three must involve work in broadcasting or a closely related industry, primarily in television.
  • Excellent production skills
  • Proven ability to conceive and create digital content that can migrate to broadcast platforms.
  • Proven experience to produce top-flight daily television news stories.
  • Proven ability to write for online and turn broadcast stories into online stories.
  • Proven ability to take conventional content and spin it into non-traditional storytelling.
  • Proven record of developing unique sources.
  • In-depth knowledge of Canadian politics.
  • Solid journalistic skills.
  • A deep understanding and appreciation of diversity of perspective, opinion and experience.
  • Established credibility as a journalist.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours, nights and weekends as necessary, often in unexpected overtime situations.
  • Must have the ability to handle a variety of functions quickly and efficiently.
  • Innovative, flexible and must be a self-starter.
  • Diligent, dedicated, relentless.
  • Ability to work for extended periods of time under the pressure of breaking and sometimes highly technical news, and still maintain a cooperative, respectful relationship with colleagues.
  • Excellent knowledge of current events.
  • Solid command of current and emerging social media tools.
  • Must be able to solve problems independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills.
  • Ability to travel across Canada or internationally.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • French language skills would be considered a strong asset.
