Respiratory Therapist Job Description

Respiratory Therapists provide critical care to patients in various hospital settings, including intensive care units, emergency departments, and operating rooms.

About the Job

As a Respiratory Therapist at the University Health Network, you will be part of a team that delivers high-quality patient care and education. You will work closely with nurses, residents, and other healthcare professionals to provide respiratory therapy services 24/7.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with airway management and respond to cardiac and respiratory arrests
  • Attend intra and inter-hospital transports of critically ill patients and administer specialty medications
  • Act as a resource for nurses, residents, and allied health personnel in respiratory care
  • Teach patients the use of respiratory therapy equipment for hospital and home care
  • Perform diagnostic tests such as spirometry, oxygen saturations, and blood gas analysis
  • Assist with bronchoscopies and manage ventilated patients according to departmental protocols
Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program
  • Previous experience as a Respiratory Therapist in adult critical care preferred
  • Registration with the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists
  • Registered with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario
  • Certified Hyperbaric Medical Technologist (CHT) preferred
  • Ability to work in a hyperbaric environment required and hyperbaric medicine experience preferred
  • Ability to perform without direct supervision
  • Effective communication skills
