The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager of Process Safety & Risk Management, you will provide guidance and technical knowledge in the application, development and coordination of process safety and risk management programs for Natural Gas Pipelines. Excellent communication skills, knowledge of process safety elements and mechanical equipment, and experience in developing, implementing and supporting process safety procedures are required. The role is in Calgary, AB.

What you'll do

  • Actively develop and implement effective process safety processes and procedures.
  • Provide interpretation, technical support, and advice on process safety matters to facility operations, engineering, projects, and management.
  • Provide oversight and periodic review of management of change (MOC) practices, participate in MOCs as process safety expert, and provide recommendations for improving MOC conformance.
  • Participate on process safety incident root-cause analyses and address corrective actions.
  • Support development and implementation of a Natural Gas Pipelines operational risk register.
  • Coordinate process safety knowledge sharing and best practices across Natural Gas pipelines and promote efficiencies where appropriate.
  • Effectively communicate and conduct process safety training, as needed.
  • Coordinate collection and maintenance of process safety information (PSI) with field operations and other engineering personnel.
  • Lead and coordinate process hazard analyses (PHA), such as What-If, Checklist, Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) Study and Bow-Tie Analysis.
  • Track and maintain corrective actions stemming from PHAs and other risk assessments. Review and verify appropriate closure for corrective action items.
  • Understand process safety implications of incidents and provide guidance to facilities for proper classification, investigation and improvements.
  • Develop and monitor key performance indicators (most importantly, leading indicators) to track process safety progress.
  • Communicate external process safety events and share process safety best practices identified within the company.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in chemical or mechanical engineering, or related discipline.
  • Registered, or eligible to register, with APEGA as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing.
  • 7+ years of applicable industry experience required, preferably in gas processing, chemical or petrochemical facility
  • Proven experience and knowledgeable with process safety and risk management programs
  • Knowledgeable, trained, and competent to facilitate PHA (e.g., What-If, Checklist, HAZOP, Bow-Tie Analysis) and PSSR processes
  • Knowledgeable with Management of Change (MOC) process and the evaluation practices and tools required to successfully complete a change
  • Knowledgeable with the design and application of Independent Protection Layers (IPL), Safety Critical Variables (SCV) and Critical Administrative Controls (CAC)
  • Knowledgeable with process safety key performance indicators
  • Understands concepts of asset life cycle management, system reliability and operations
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, pressure equipment data sheets, and other integrity related documents.
