Job Title: Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO)

Responsible for ensuring the reliable and cost-effective operation of Ontario's electricity grid, this role involves complex problem-solving, technical writing, and leadership in a fast-paced team environment.

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) is a critical organization that operates at the centre of Ontario's power system, ensuring access to reliable and affordable electricity when and where it's needed.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Resolve complex problems and inquiries supporting real-time operations, operations planning, or planning functions through analysis and application of highly specialized technology in the field of power system operation.
  • Develop and maintain suitable models, including Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) models, to support the IESO's Energy Management and Market Systems.
  • Establish recommended approaches for efficient and innovative means to maintain and support the IESO's contingency analysis software.
  • Specify and review the results of tests to confirm that facilities satisfy the IESO's performance requirements.
  • Support IESO security, adequacy, and operability obligations found in the Market Rules and in applicable NERC and NPCC reliability standards.
  • Lead and prepare key reliability compliance evidence, including work procedures, RSAWs, market manuals, training material, and participation in reliability audits.
  • Participate in task forces, internal/external committees, and represent the IESO on interconnection committees.
  • Supply a consultative service to other departments and/or business units on matters related to adequacy, security, operability.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to other members of the group.
  • Sign or sign and seal documents as a P Eng. taking professional responsibility for one's own work.
Requirements:
  • Advanced engineering knowledge of electrical theory, power system analysis, and control, associated mathematics, and computer science.
  • Knowledge of technical writing to prepare effective reports.
  • Completion of an engineering/applied sciences degree from an accredited university or equivalent education.
  • Understanding of IBRs theory, operation, limitations, and performance, particularly their impact on power system stability during system disturbances.
  • Proficiency in EMT analysis using the PSCAD software package.
  • Experience in conducting EMT studies for IBR integration.
  • Licence to engage in the practice of professional engineering in Ontario and competence in the field of electrical engineering.
  • Significant exposure to the overall power system operation through progressive training as an engineer in this technical field.
