Indigenous Relations Specialists work with Indigenous leadership and communities to foster and maintain relationships and ongoing dialogue between them and Modern Niagara. As the Indigenous Relations Specialist at Modern Niagara you will support nationally on strategic Initiatives, Managing relationships with partners - internal and external and development of other projects that promote Indigenous inclusion.

The Indigenous Relations Specialist will provide focused expertise and drive strategic initiatives, accelerating the company's reconciliation efforts and ensuring these initiatives are integrated into broader business strategies.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Build and develop a strategy to ensure alignment with local communities
  • Monitor the strategy and initiatives to ensure KPIs are being met quarterly and yearly
  • Execute projects with multiple teams nationally in our 6 major regions
  • Lead development through building relationships with Indigenous nations, aligning the Truth and Reconciliation Commission call to Action #92
  • Collaborate/engage with local indigenous communities to ensure Modern Niagara remains compliant with government procurement strategies
  • Work cooperatively with the national proposal development team to ensure Modern Niagara is well positioned to meet prescriptive indigenous participation mandates
  • Participates in RFP and RFQ processes including proposal writing for large infrastructure projects
  • Work on grant applications
  • Align with industry partners on established initiatives, emphasizing indigenous engagement
  • Ensure Modern Niagara is compliant for regular audits by government bodies or project partners that evaluate compliance with Indigenous relations policies and agreements
  • Support the procurement team to ensure Indigenous communities are incorporated into process
  • Collaborate with internal teams within DEI, Talent Acquisition, Corporate Social Responsibility and more to align national and regional activities
  • Support and advance the Modern Niagara Truth and Reconciliation plan by being co-chair to the Employee Resource Group

Qualifications and Job Requirements:

  • 5+ years experience working with Indigenous communities in a liaison, advisory or community engagement role
  • Experience in the construction industry is a strong asset
  • A post-secondary diploma or degree in a related field, i.e; Indigenous Studies or Indigenous Relations
  • Strong knowledge of First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey complex and sensitive information
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build trust and rapport with diverse partners, internally and externally
  • Ability to analyze and interpret policies, legislations and agreements
  • High ethical standards and a commitment to the cause of the position
