About the Role:
We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse to join our Families in Recovery Program at BC Women's Hospital + Health Centre. As a key member of our interdisciplinary team, you will provide high-quality care to expectant mothers and their infants, addressing their physical and mental health needs in a non-judgmental and trauma-informed manner.
About the Program:
The Families in Recovery Program is a provincial specialized mental health and substance use perinatal service that provides primary care to antenatal and postpartum women who use substances and to infants exposed to substances. Our acute care service has 12 beds for women who want to stabilize their substance use and address any pregnancy-related concerns and/or withdraw from substance use during pregnancy.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide direct healthcare services to clients presenting with a wide variety of acute and chronic illnesses/diseases, including communicable diseases, substance use, mental health, and general health issues in the antenatal and postpartum/postnatal period.
- Observe, monitor, evaluate, and document client progress, symptoms, and behavioral changes; perform a variety of healthcare interventions utilizing nursing skills, including therapeutic interventions using a variety of modalities.
- Initiate and facilitate discharge planning; identify referrals to other healthcare practitioners.
- Provide education and support to clients/groups using a health promotion approach.
Our Comprehensive Specialty Training Program:

What We're Looking For:
- Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse/ Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM)
- Two (2) years' recent experience providing acute or community health nursing care/services to clients who have concurrent psychiatric and/or substance abuse/misuse disorders, including one (1) year perinatal and nursery nursing experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Current CPR Certification
- Newborn Resuscitation Program (NRP) provider
- Breastfeeding update, minimum 6 hours, in the last two years
- Fetal Health Assessment Certificate
Key Skills and Abilities:
- Community health nursing theory, including mental health and substance use, communicable diseases, and practice within a client/family-centered approach
- British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM) Standards for Nursing Practice
- The BC Mental Health Act, other facilities, and community resources
- Facilitation, mediation, and conflict resolution techniques
- Commitment to develop knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments found in the foundational documents, including Truth & Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study
- Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act
- Knowledge of social, economic, political, and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism, and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments
