Field Technician - Contract

Location: Headingley, MB

Where the Chemistry Happens...

We are looking for a Field technician to contribute to the success of the breeding program as well as the success and innovation of the InVigor brand and introduction of new hybrids to the market. Accountable to the Agronomy Manager, this position provides technical support to the field trialing program in the region for the purpose of delivering high quality data for statistical analysis and selection. The goal of our breeding program is to develop and register new hybrid varieties of B. juncea and B. napus (canola) for the North American market.

Formula for Success: You Will...
  • Support field operations as required. Safely operate a variety of field equipment to seed, spray, maintain, and harvest field trials as required, including transporting equipment between sites (1-ton truck and bumper or 5th wheel hitch trailer).
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on a variety of small plot field research equipment including tractors, seeders, sprayers, swathers and combines with direction from manager. When repairs cannot be done on site, support the logistics of taking to dealer or repair shop for maintenance.
  • Support with fabrication and improvements on required equipment during off season repairs.
  • Maintain truck and trailer fleet for the region. This will include ordering and managing yearly fleet requirements, coordinating maintenance and repairs, as well as managing yearly trailer safeties.
  • Supervise and coach Summer Associates as required.
  • In collaboration with your manager, implement and maintain EHS (Environment, Health and Safety) program for facility and operations.
  • Collect in-depth phenotypic evaluation notes following protocols provided and ensure data is entered electronically and maintained accurately at all times.
  • Execute seed quality analysis (NIR) and liaise with lab to ensure accurate seed quality data.
  • Support QA/QMS in activities as required by the breeding program.

  • Minimum diploma in Agriculture or related technical discipline.
  • Competent in troubleshooting farm and small plot research equipment, as well as ability to service and repair equipment. Certificate in mechanics, welding (or related field) would be an asset.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team with direction from the manager to assist in conducting a high-quality field research program.
  • Heavy trailer endorsement, air endorsement, or extensive experience trailering equipment is an asset.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills and ability to be flexible and modify plans as required to minimize impact on regional program as situations arise.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team either as a member or supervising contract employees.
  • A valid class 5 driver's license required.
