Job Description

The Water Distribution Branch manages the operation and maintenance of the City's water distribution system, including condition assessment, leak detection, operation, repair, and maintenance of all mains, valves, and services. As a Water Distribution Operator, you will perform and assist with various tasks related to the water distribution system using specialized tools and equipment. This includes maintenance, inspection, water quality testing, component installation, replacement, or repair, manual labor, and other related duties and tasks associated with the operation and maintenance of the City's water distribution system.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform and assist with tasks related to the water distribution system, including maintenance, inspection, water quality testing, and repair
  • Operate and maintain specialized tools and equipment, such as drills, boring machines, valve turning machines, and pipe saws
  • Conduct condition assessments and leak detection to identify and repair issues with the water distribution system
  • Assist with operation, repair, and maintenance of all mains, valves, and services within the distribution system
  • Inspect and maintain fire hydrants and support City capital and private development works related to water distribution buried infrastructure
Requirements
  • Completion of Grade 12
  • Minimum of 13 months of experience in a construction or utility operations and maintenance environment
  • Must obtain and maintain Ontario MOE Operator-in-Training Drinking Water Distribution Operator Certificate
  • Must obtain and maintain Ontario MOE Class 1 Drinking Water Distribution Operator Certificate
  • Must obtain Ontario unrestricted AZ or DZ class driver's license (or provincial equivalent)
Knowledge and Skills
  • Advanced knowledge of water main and appurtenance materials, installation standards, and specifications
  • Intermediate knowledge of mathematics, chemistry, water system hydraulics, and conveyance principles
  • Intermediate knowledge of public health principles and water quality control, assurance, and disinfection procedures
  • Intermediate knowledge of current provincial legislation pertaining to drinking water systems
  • Advanced knowledge of health and safety procedures, equipment, and legislation
  • Detailed knowledge of corporate/departmental by-laws, policies, procedures, and the City's standards and specifications
  • Detailed knowledge of techniques and equipment used to safely excavate around, under, or in close proximity to other utility structures
  • Detailed knowledge of roadway work operations and traffic control regulations
  • Detailed knowledge of safe work practices in hazardous environments

What You Need to Know
  • Language Requirement: English oral, reading, writing
  • Police Record Check: The successful candidate will be required to complete a Criminal Records and Judicial Matters Check
  • Driver's License Requirement: A valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver's license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated
  • You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay
  • Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements
