About the Opportunity

Across the Province of Nova Scotia, there are robust Hospitalist programs, which benefit from the expertise of Associate Physicians (APs). Active AP's working within the Hospitalist program are licensed with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS) under the Clinical Assistant license type and are employed by NSH to provide primary clinical care within the Hospitalist Program as Physician extenders.

Within this opportunity, we will be providing a pathway for Associate Physicians to obtain a Restricted license as Physician Hospitalist and the Most Responsible Physician (MRP). This will be achieved through a 2-year competency-based training and assessment program with established standards, and a curriculum of training that includes direct/ indirect supervision and a Comprehensive Clinical Assessment of Practice.

Throughout the duration of the 2-year program, APs will assist in the provision of care under the authority of the Program Director and Preceptor (staff Physician with privileges within the department in which the AP will be practicing). Participation in the on-call schedule is required and will be assigned by the Program Director, completed by the AP, with direct and indirect oversight by the Preceptor.

Clinical Responsibilities
  • Function as a member of the team at the level of a PGY2 or PGY3
  • Participate in a directed continuing professional development (CPD) program, focused on enhancing competencies related to the Hospitalist scope of practice
  • Undergo CPSNS-directed supervision under a preceptorship model of skill development and assessment
  • Make regular rounds with their Preceptor and liaise with nurses, attending staff, crisis workers and other members of the health care team in the development and management of the overall patient care plan
  • Manage the day-to-day care of patients, including writing medical orders on charts and responding to emergencies, in consultation with the Preceptor and attending staff
  • Manage new admissions, transfer of care opportunities and discharges
  • Perform assessments and examinations within the scope of his/her demonstrated competence and privileges and according to established policies and protocols
  • Perform and document admission history, progress notes, discharge summaries, consultation notes, reports etc
  • Communicate with patients, families, referring and family Physicians concerning patient management plans
  • Arrange consultation with other departments for care and investigation and follow through on investigations and arrange follow-up and outpatient visits
  • Attend educational sessions and rounds as time permits as well as monthly departmental meetings

  • Participate in on-call responsibilities of the service
