About the Opportunity

Nova Scotia Health is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Associate Physician to join our Hospitalist program. As an Associate Physician, you will work under the supervision of an attending physician to provide primary clinical care to patients. The Hospitalist program at Nova Scotia Health is a robust and well-established program that benefits from the expertise of Associate Physicians. As an Associate Physician, you will be licensed with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS) under the Clinical Assistant license type and will be employed by NSH to provide primary clinical care within the Hospitalist Program as a Physician extender.

Throughout the duration of the 2-year program, you will assist in the provision of care under the authority of the Program Director and Preceptor (staff Physician with privileges within the department in which you will be practicing). Participation in the on-call schedule is required and will be assigned by the Program Director, completed by you, with direct and indirect oversight by the Preceptor.

Clinical Responsibilities
  • Function as a member of the team at the level of a PGY2 or PGY3
  • Participate in a directed continuing professional development (CPD) program, focused on enhancing competencies related to the Hospitalist scope of practice
  • Undergo CPSNS-directed supervision under a preceptorship model of skill development and assessment
  • Make regular rounds with your Preceptor and liaise with nurses, attending staff, crisis workers and other members of the health care team in the development and management of the overall patient care plan
  • Manage the day-to-day care of patients, including writing medical orders on charts and responding to emergencies, in consultation with the Preceptor and attending staff
  • Manage new admissions, transfer of care opportunities and discharges
  • Perform assessments and examinations within the scope of your demonstrated competence and privileges and according to established policies and protocols
  • Perform and document admission history, progress notes, discharge summaries, consultation notes, reports etc
  • Communicate with patients, families, referring and family Physicians concerning patient management plans
  • Arrange consultation with other departments for care and investigation and follow through on investigations and arrange follow-up and outpatient visits
  • Attend educational sessions and rounds as time permits as well as monthly departmental meetings
  • Participate in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) of at least 50 hours per year
  • Participate in on-call responsibilities of the service
About You

We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated individual who has postgraduate training and independent practice in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine. You must meet the requirements to obtain a Clinical Assistant License to act as an Associate Physician, from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS) (https://cpsns.ns.ca/resource/clinical-assistant-licence). CMPA coverage is required. You must have a good command of written and spoken English and be able to promote and maintain good interpersonal skills. Physical demand - You must be able to sit, stand, walk and perform duties as outlined above. Mental and Visual demand – High; you must be able to deal with stressful situations. Competencies in other languages are an asset. Ability to hold a valid work permit, permanent resident status or Canadian citizenship is a must.

Compensation and Benefits

$51.66 - $65.81 Hourly
