Duties and Responsibilities:


Working in an interdisciplinary team environment and reporting to the Director of Health Services, the Mental Health Nurse is responsible for providing case management for students with complex mental health challenges and/or disorders.

As a certified psychiatric and mental health nurse, the incumbent utilizes the nursing process to provide mental health support, crisis intervention and care to students experiencing mental health problems and/or disorders.


In addition, the Mental Health Nurse liaises with relevant Health and Counselling staff and external community agencies in supporting case management for students experiencing complex mental health disorders/challenges, including monitoring client response to treatment, and determining risk of harm to self and/or others.

The mental health nurse participates in the provision of campus mental health and addictions education, as well as policy development.

Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:

  • Special knowledge and skills needed include crisis intervention and risk assessment, psychiatric diagnoses symptomology, crisis and behaviour management, pharmacology, suicidal intervention model, basic chemical dependency, stages of change model, motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioural therapy.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills are essential to promote patient confidence and to obtain patient compliance.
  • Excellent written communication is mandatory to provide accurate medical assessments to physicians, counselling staff and other health care professionals.
  • Considerable flexibility in duties performed and the ability to work under pressure, and to make timely, accurate medical decisions is necessary.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Must possess resourcefulness and initiative.
  • Discretion is required with respect to confidentiality of patient information.
  • Experience in clinical case formulation and treatment planning in a mental health setting.
  • Experience responding to clients in emotional crisis or urgent need in an unscheduled or drop-in format.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to develop therapeutic rapport in a non-judgmental manner with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience working in a shared care model with an interdisciplinary team.
  • Understanding of the developmental stage of this age group, key mental health issues, and the unique stresses experienced by students in post-secondary.
Education and Experience:
The above is normally acquired through the completion of:

  • A registered nurse (BScN) with current registration in good standing with College of Nurses. Completion of the Canadian Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse certification CPMHN(C) or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience working in a setting with individuals with mental health and substance use issues preferably with 2 years with emerging adults. Experience with case management, crisis/trauma counselling, ASIST intervention and working independently. Experience working with community agencies and resources for mental health. Working knowledge or the Mental Health Act, Substitute Decision Act, and the Health Care Consent Act.
