Job Summary

This is a challenging and rewarding role that requires a high level of clinical expertise and leadership skills. As a Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse, you will provide person-centered and recovery-oriented care to clients experiencing problematic substance use. You will work collaboratively with the interprofessional care team to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care plans that promote the health and well-being of our clients.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and provide direct nursing care to clients in compliance with standards of practice, including reviewing client/family history, conducting physical/psychosocial assessments, and developing a care plan specific to the client's needs.
  • Process physician or nurse practitioner orders, including initiating unit standing orders, administering medications, and monitoring and documenting the effects.
  • Manage emergencies, including drug overdose, heart attack, assaultive behavior, and seizures, by responding in a manner appropriate to the emergency and in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Consult and collaborate with interdisciplinary team members and other healthcare professionals/providers to identify and resolve client/family issues.
  • Provide general and crisis counseling to clients who present to the Emergency Department, IPU, and medical wards, including short-term follow-up in accordance with approved treatment plans.
  • Teach clients and family members about illness prevention, health maintenance, and health promotion strategies.
  • Participate in quality improvement and risk management activities, including identifying and reporting high-risk situations and evaluating the effect of changes in nursing practice.
  • Act as a clinical resource/support person to clients and families, as well as nursing and healthcare professionals.
  • Maintain clinical records, including collecting and documenting information about clients and their families, nursing observations, telephone communications, progress notes, interventions, and patient outcomes.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • Graduation from an approved Nursing Program with current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse and/or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Completion of approved addictions or substance use training, or substance use certificate program, and one year's recent related experience working in an addictions environment with individuals with substance use disorders.
  • Ability to complete initial and ongoing mental health and substance use client assessments and provide nursing care through appropriate/prescribed technical, therapeutic, safety-type interventions.
  • Knowledge of mental illness and substance use treatment, psychopharmacology, counselling, and group facilitation skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with clients, families/caregivers, the public, medical staff, and members of the interprofessional care team.
  • Ability to promote person-centered care that demonstrates empathy for clients/families/caregivers, sensitivity to diverse cultures and preferences, including advocacy for special populations.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work, collaborate with and promote cooperation among members of the interprofessional care team, and use factual information and basic principles and procedures to support nursing decisions and actions.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
