Canada's climate objectives impose an energy transition on a scale and at a speed that is unprecedented. Robust evidence to inform policy design and decision-making is also needed to guide this transition. To reduce the uncertainties surrounding this shift, the Energy Modelling Hub (EMH), a pan-Canadian boundary organization led by the Institut de l’énergie Trottier (Polytechnique Montréal), the Institute for Integrated Energy Systems (University of Victoria), and the School of Public Policy (University of Calgary) , was created to support Canada's energy modeling community and forge strong ties with policy makers and other energy model users in the public and private sector to support better decisions regarding Canada’s fast evolving energy system


The EMH maintains and provides access to a selection of robust models, facilitates interactions with other modellers across sectors and, overall, creates a national network of energy and electricity modellers, policy-makers and other experts to guide the transformation of our complex energy systems to provide evidence-based insights and made-in-Canada solutions.


We are in search of a passionate and proficient Energy System Modeling Specialist to join our vibrant team. Under the guidance of the Modelling Platform Coordinator at EMH, you will be instrumental in integrating, maintaining, deploying, documenting, and implementing training related to energy models within an open-access platform. This platform will house energy-economy models and energy system models, serving as a robust repository and collaborative environment for Canada's energy modelling community. Your critical role will entail providing robust solutions and services based on updated and reliable energy models, thus significantly contributing to the advancement of our mission.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Integration of Energy Models into an open-source platform:


  • Develop a standard format for models' inputs and outputs to ensure consistency and ease of integration.
  • Provide a solution for data and scenario storage and repository, ensuring secure and organized data management.
  • Provide support for model linkage & environment handling, to ensure seamless interaction between different models and workflows.
  • Integrate models with visualization tools to enhance the interpretability and communication of modeling results.
  • Foster close collaboration with external partners to seamlessly integrate existing energy models into the open-source platform.
  • Ensure the compatibility and interoperability of models with the platform.


2. Maintenance and Update of Models:


  • Oversee regular surveillance and maintenance of energy models supported by the EMH.
  • Adapt models in response to policy reforms, technological advancements, new data, and domain requirements.
  • Work with model users to understand their needs and plan model updates.
  • Manage the repositories of the energy models using Git and organize responses to posts on the issue boards.


3. Deployment of Models for Users:


  • Ensure efficient deployment of energy models for users.
  • Provide exemplary technical support to users to resolve model-related issues.
  • Create appropriate test cases to package along with the models.


4. Documentation of Models:


  • Develop comprehensive and accessible documentation of energy models.
  • Keep documentation updated in line with model evolutions.


5. Preparation of Training Material:


  • Design and prepare engaging and instructive training material for users of energy models.
  • Host enriching training sessions for clients and interested users.


Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, data science, engineering, operations research, or any related field.
  • Experience in broad energy system modeling and/or energy-economy modeling; please note that experience exclusively in energy building modeling may not align with the scope of this role.
  • Proficiency in energy modeling software and tools, notably Python and Pyomo.
  • Comfort with collaborative development tools like GitHub.
  • Ability to apply analytical and mathematical methods for problem-solving and decision-making in the context of operations research.
  • Proficient in optimization and simulation for various applications in energy systems.
  • Previous experience or coursework in linear programming or mixed-integer linear programming.
  • Develop, execute, and evaluate energy models; perform techno-economic analysis for comprehensive analysis and optimization.
  • Employ a cross-disciplinary approach integrating methods from statistics, econometrics, and operational research in energy modeling.
  • Apply skills in the energy domain, especially in modeling and analyzing energy systems.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Very good written and oral communication skills in French or English; bilingualism is an asset.
  • Attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Autonomy, organizational sense, and ability to work with teams distributed across multiple sites.
