Edmonton Alberta, Edmonton region, Canada www.pathfind.ca Full time

Pathfind has partnered exclusively with the Alberta Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA) to recruit for a Safety Resource Specialist position, an integral role within the organization. You are a skilled health and safety professional looking for a progressive, mission-focused organization where you can make a difference for an entire industry. You want a challenging and engaging role where you can use your skills to significantly impact hundreds of businesses by delivering content and supporting our role as the official health and safety association for hotels & conference centers all over Alberta.

You have a passion for promoting safe and healthy workplaces. You will be the in-house subject matter expert on all things health and safety for hotel employers in WCB Industry Code 87503. In addition to providing support and resources to hotels, you will liaise with industry stakeholders and partners to keep a finger on the pulse of relevant health and safety trends. You will translate OHS legislation and policy into practical information for safety subscribers, understanding the holistic approach needed for health and safety. You will own your role and be comfortable working independently and collaborating with our Director of HR & Safety Services. You leverage your superior interpersonal skills in delivering content through presentations and training sessions and working with individual safety subscribers one-on-one.

The Alberta Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) is an Edmonton-based not-for-profit, membership-based organization and funded safety association for the Workers Compensation Board (WCB) Industry Code 87503. Its purpose is to help Alberta hotels prosper. Its advocacy work protects and promotes members' interests in legislation, policy, and regulations that affect Alberta’s tourism and hospitality industry. The AHLA’s cost savings programs and services provide added value to members and improve the quality of hotel operations. Its safety programming provides relevant and up-to-date training and resources for the industry.

The AHLA has been around for a century, and a large part of our success comes down to our service-oriented, collaborative, and innovative team. The AHLA seeks a talented and detail-oriented Health and Safety professional to promote and deliver health and safety resources and training to the Alberta hotel industry. The successful candidate can function in this role's strategic and operational levels. That’s where you come in.

  • Key Responsibilities: Update and manage health and safety content for hoteliers, including sourcing content for our website, blogs, and SHIFT newsletter.
  • Develop, schedule, and execute health and safety training through the AHLA’s Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Administer user accounts, enrollments, and reporting in the LMS.
  • Support in-person training delivery at hotel sites throughout Alberta (some travel may be required).
  • Schedule and coordinate safety topics and guest speakers for virtual Webinars.
  • Understand and translate safety legislation into content and resources that is easily understood and acted on by hotels.
  • Act as the AHLA representative on health and safety industry panels and committees.
  • You can manage relationships with key accounts and stakeholders to gain insights on program offerings and opportunities.
  • Evaluate industry safety data and look for emerging trends to stay ahead of the curve and better educate safety subscribers on safety in the workplace.
  • Could you collaborate with the HR & Safety Services Director to develop and execute the annual business plan and budget?
  • Track essential safety data from our program offerings and coordinate with management to prepare reporting packages for the leadership team and Board of Directors.
  • Assist in administering the AHLA’s new Employer of Choice designation program and supporting members with applications, training, and resources.

Key Requirements:

You are forward-thinking, a great communicator, and work collaboratively with staff, members, and stakeholders. As a small team, we’re all hands on deck, meaning there will be plenty of learning opportunities, variety, and a chance to evolve within your role. You have industry experience, and while solid health and safety experience is required for this role, what’s equally important is who you are.

  • You’ll be an excellent fit for this role if you are A problem-solver. You’re proactive, can anticipate problems or opportunities before they arise, bring ideas forward, and are interested in finding better ways of working. You have an analytical mind and enjoy solving complex problems.
  • You are a strong communicator. You always get your message across clearly through email or in-person conversations with members, staff, and others.
  • Accountable—You provide quality and timely support to members and safety subscribers and stay abreast of trends, legislation, and policies that impact hotels.
  • Organized – You know how to manage competing priorities to meet deadlines effectively.
  • Motivated – You are fully engaged to get the best results.
  • Essential Qualifications: A bachelor's degree or diploma in occupational health and safety, environmental health, or a related field is an asset.
  • Knowledge of local regulations: familiarity with Alberta's occupational health and safety regulations and other relevant laws and codes related to the hotel industry is essential.
  • Previous experience in occupational health and safety, preferably within the hotel industry or a related sector.
  • Competence in conducting risk assessments, identifying potential hazards, and developing strategies to mitigate risks in a hotel setting.
  • Knowledge of emergency response protocols and the ability to develop and implement emergency plans specific to hotel operations.
  • Experience designing and delivering safety training programs for hotel staff to ensure they know safety procedures and regulations.
  • Experience coordinating with multiple entities and managing various projects at once.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are crucial for interacting with hotel staff at all levels, promoting safety awareness, and preparing reports.
  • Adaptability: The hotel industry can be dynamic, so adapting to changing environments and handling multiple responsibilities is essential.
  • Teamwork: Working with a team and collaborating on projects is critical.
  • Technical Skills: Using relevant training software, data analysis tools, and Microsoft Office applications proficiently.
  • Experience working with a Learning Management System (we use Docebo).
  • Ability to build effective relationships with staff, business partners, and members.
  • Hotel industry experience is an asset.

Working with the AHLA:

  1. We’re a close-knit, collaborative group committed to providing our members with the best service and value. Some of our team members have been with us for 5, 10, and even 20 years, which we think says a lot. All of us embrace our 5 Core Values: We live with Integrity—We choose to do the right thing, even when it’s hard.
  2. We take pride in Serving. Service is an attitude. It’s about doing your best in whatever job you’ve been given.
  3. We embrace Challenges – If you prefer a job familiar with repetitive tasks and minor disruption, working at the AHLA is probably not for you.
  4. We are Stewards – Anything less than taking full responsibility for the trust we’ve been given does not reflect our value of Stewardship.
  5. We have Fun – If you want to work for us, bring your passion and enthusiasm, and prepare to have some fun

In 2018, the AHLA implemented the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) to help us better execute our vision and instill clear focus, discipline, and accountability. The EOS tools help us work more clearly and consistently to achieve better results.
