Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Edit/Media Specialist I E/W for University Press. Under the supervision of the editorial director, acquires and evaluates manuscripts and book proposals in the fields designated. Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Presents books to the editorial committee of the Press.
  • Works in an entrepreneurial fashion towards signing about 25 titles per year, turning over to the production director between 20 to 25 titles per year.
  • Negotiates with authors within previously agreed upon parameters.
  • Generates about $300,000 of Press income each year through the titles signed.
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in an academic field related to the area of acquisitions for which the editor is responsible, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Two years of acquisitions experience to fulfill the demands of the job.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Valid driver’s license required for travel for business demands.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong office experience, effective writing and oral skills, strong organizational talents, attention to detail, and the ability to work well with a student assistant and across departments at the Press.
  • Moderate level of computer literacy.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduate education with an advanced degree.
  • Demonstrated writing ability.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Must be able to travel, interact with others either virtually or in person.
  • Lifting/moving of boxes of books may (rarely) be required.
Special Conditions
  • Clean Driving Record.
