Our client, a leading heavy manufacturing company in the nuclear sector, is seeking a Cost Estimator to join their team in Niagara Falls, ON. Reporting to the Sales Director, you would work closely with the engineering and purchasing teams to provide proper cost estimates for large projects and proposals.
The successful candidate will coordinate the creation of Bills of Materials (BOM) with Engineering and Production, estimate costs using industry-standard methods, and work closely with Purchasing to obtain quotes for non-standard materials and services. This role involves regularly sourcing market prices for standard materials, tracking material indices and pricing, maintaining and updating standard product costs, exploring new material sources, validating shipping costs, and developing international shipping contacts.

Responsibilities:

  • Review drawings and Technical Specifications (TS) for RFP/RFQ/RFI submissions and collaborate with the assigned engineer.
  • Understand the scope of work and coordinate with Engineering, Purchasing, Quality, and Sales to ensure timely completion of estimates.
  • Track estimation projects, coordinate with relevant departments, and communicate updates to Engineering and Sales.
  • Prepare estimates using industry-standard tools, agree on costs for non-standard materials, and establish a consistent estimation process.
  • Report on costing progress, highlight gaps, and adjust efforts to meet proposal deadlines.
  • Participate in Price-to-Win meetings and assist Purchasing in building relationships with new suppliers.
  • Understand in-house and subcontractor manufacturing capabilities and support Purchasing in meeting diverse business volume obligations.
  • Recommend cost control and reduction strategies and actively support cross-functional team efforts.

Required Skills:

  • Proven experience as a Cost Estimator, with knowledge of cost estimating methodologies and industry standards.
  • Experience in design and fabrication drawing review, with the ability to read and understand Mechanical Engineering drawings.
  • Strong understanding of fabrication processes such as machining, welding, and bending, with a minimum of 5 years of related industry experience.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks or willingness to become proficient, with the goal of creating CAD models and quote drawings.
  • Ability to multitask and manage competing priorities, work independently, and integrate into a team.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, computer proficiency, particularly in MS Office, and a commitment to accountability, integrity, and trustworthiness.
