SUMMARY


Working under the direction of the Product Development Supervisor, the Product Developer - Level 1 assists in the technical development of Keilhauer products. You will translate concepts and information into data and use feedback to modify designs using your keen attention to detail. Extensive on-the-job training is required to become proficient. Typical duration of Level 1 role is 3 years.


In this role, you will develop basic 3D CAD files describing product components and assemblies based on preliminary conceptual ideas. You will produce product engineering drawings with supplementary documentation and be able to verify the accuracy of the models you create. Part of your role will involve building models and physical prototypes. This information is used for analytical testing and the manufacturing of production tooling. The Product Developer - Level 1 will participate in design & development discussions with the Product Development team and will confidently notify managers of any problems arising in component or assembly geometry or with 2D drawings or 3D modeling.


This highly technical position is best suited to a detail-oriented and analytical thinker with strong mechanical abilities and exceptional problem-solving skills who enjoys working in a collaborative environment. Responding to requests in a timely manner furthers Keilhauer’s mission of making work comfortable for all.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES


Develops basic 3D CAD files describing product components & assemblies

  • Responsible for producing 3D Parametric CAD models and assemblies for parts that do not require advanced Creo software skills.
  • Produces engineering drawings and supplementary documentation.
  • Completes low-difficulty product development procedures.
  • Verifies the accuracy of models.
  • Focuses mainly on basic, solid modeling; begins to acquire proficiency in low-difficulty surface modeling.
  • Measures, validates and documents first-off parts to data.
  • Acquires proficiency using the 3D analysis tools available to the Engineering department.


Provides insight and analysis

  • Participates in design and development discussions.
  • Liaises with Industrial Designers, as required.
  • Identifies issues and notifies leaders if problems arise in component or assembly geometry.
  • Notifies managers of any changes that may arise during 2D drawings or 3D modeling.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • 6 months’ experience using Creo or similar 3D CAD software; practical engineering experience in a fast-paced manufacturing setting is an asset.
  • Post-Secondary diploma, preferably in Mechanical Design and Drafting Technology or related field.
  • Proficient in solid modeling.
  • Knowledge of mechanical drafting and drawing standards.
  • Prototype building/3D printing experience is an asset.
  • Strong problem solving skills and analysis required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and other technical programs.


ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL AND INTELLECTUAL REQUIREMENTS

Communication: Must be able to interact professionally, communicate effectively and exchange information accurately with all internal and external stakeholders through email, phone communications and face-to-face contact; must have strong interpersonal, written and verbal communications.

  • Mobility: Must be able to sit/stand at a computer terminal for extended periods of time; may be required to go to various locations throughout the organization; some reaching for items above and below desk level; some reaching, bending, squatting and stooping to access files.
  • Manual Dexterity & Coordination: Must have the strength, dexterity and coordination to regularly use hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and phone; dexterity and coordination to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs.
  • Vision: Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, colour vision and the ability to adjust focus; depth perception/spatial visualization required.
  • Cognitive Ability: Must be able to read, analyze and interpret documents such as operating instructions and CAD drawings; must possess the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; must be accurate and detail oriented; must possess high level of critical and logical thinking, analysis and reasoning; must be proficient with technical knowledge, mathematics and spatial visualization; must be able to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form; must be able to learn and retain large amounts of detailed information.


WORKING CONDITIONS

This role is performed primarily in an office environment which is typically quiet. Most of your duties will be fulfilled with the use of a computer and office equipment, with communications taking place by phone, email or in person. Some functions of your role will be conducted in the manufacturing facility and the prototype workshop, where you may be exposed to dust particulates and noise.

  • This position requires long periods of focused reading and typing.
  • Must have the ability to deal with problems involving few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Must be able to handle frequent interruptions to planned work activities.
  • Must be able to respond and adapt quickly in a dynamic and changing environment.
  • Must be able to handle the stress of dealing with issues in a professional manner.
  • This position requires occasional physical work within a prototype workshop setting.
  • Must be willing to participate in seminars, training and/or thought leadership relevant to the position or industry.
