About the Opportunity
Reporting to the Zone Medical Executive Director and working within a co-leadership model with an Administrative Co-Lead, the Zone Medical Department Head provides strategic and operational planning and service leadership, in collaboration with relevant administrative Department leaders.

The Zone Medical Department Head has authority over and is responsible for the clinical care of patients within the zone department, including the scheduling of medical staff members and ensuring appropriate clinical coverage is provided; and in particular ensuring that all department members are compliant with NSH Policies, the Medical Staff Bylaws, and the Medical Staff Rules and Regulations of the NSHA;

Responsibilities

The Zone Medical Department Head will:

  1. Hold responsibility for the administrative functioning of the department, including regular department meetings and providing the Zone Medical Executive Director with meeting minutes.
  2. Work with Hospitalist Site Leads, Medical Site Leads, and operational leadership to ensure service continuity and meet key patient flow objectives, overseeing scheduling practices, including vacation requests, on-call scheduling, and locum utilization.
  3. Participate as an active member of the Zone Medical Advisory Committee (ZMAC) to:
  1. Advise on the quality of care and treatment provided to the zone department’s patients.
  2. Advise on the fulfillment of teaching and research responsibilities within the zone department.
  3. Participate in developing, reporting on, and overseeing the zone department’s objectives, planning, budgeting, resource allocation, and utilization.
  4. Make recommendations on physician resource needs of the zone department after consulting with relevant leaders.
Organize and implement clinical and academic activities of the department, ensuring alignment with NSHA organization and system priorities, including monitoring standards, quality, and resource utilization.Develop and implement a plan focused on improving access and flow for the zone, including community hospitals and cross-facility transfers.Attend meetings of the Access and Flow Network Council and contribute by sharing local context and participating in strategy development.Ensure the maintenance and enforcement of professional standards within the department and implement quality assurance and improvement initiatives.Address and resolve medical staff issues, overseeing complaint and discipline management as required.Attend relevant committee meetings as assigned by the Medical Executive Director.Provide co-leadership with the Zone administrative director for strategic and operational planning and budgeting.Monitor the performance and effectiveness of the medical staff members, acting on issues as required.Review the performance of zone department members at least annually and provide performance management where necessary.Coordinate medical students and residents in the Zone, supervising residents' education requirements where applicable.Support the research agenda within the department.Participate in clinical services planning for the Zone/NSHA.Collaborate with the ZMED and Medical Site Leads to lead recruitment/retention for the department, ensuring onboarding processes are completed with support as required.Participate in leadership development.
Qualifications

- MD, licensable in Nova Scotia
- 3-5 years' experience as a medical department member with experience engaging, mentoring, and empowering teams and stakeholders in a collaborative manner.
