Trade Compliance Manager

Your role and responsibilities

The mission of the International Trade Compliance Specialist is to support the Country Trade Compliance Officer (CTCO) in implementing the international trade compliance program at the national level (Canada), and to ensure that all local business units operate in accordance with export laws and regulations, as well as ABB's Global Trade internal policies and requirements. The International Trade Compliance Specialist reports directly to the Country Trade Compliance Officer (CTCO), who sets functional objectives corresponding to compliance program milestones and specific local compliance needs. Specifically, the International Trade Compliance Specialist will be responsible for leading governance projects related to international trade compliance, such as creating training curriculums and profiles, as well as developing local procedures specific to Canadian and US trade requirements. The International Trade Compliance Specialist will also occasionally provide support to requests from Local Trade Compliance Officers (LTCOs) and operational functions on export control and customs compliance matters, as well as review and resolve verification hits from parties. This role is located in Saint-Laurent and the work model is hybrid. Your responsibilities: • Export Controls and Customs Compliance : may act as a point of contact to respond to requests for assistance from Local Trade Compliance Officers (LTCOs) in their day-to-day operational activities. • Governance, Directives and Procedures : ensure the creation of a procedural structure as well as local written procedures regarding international trade compliance addressing applicable local requirements for export controls, Canadian and global sanctions, and customs. Assist in creating tools and templates. • Governance, Training Program : implement an international trade compliance training program, create a training structure by developing training curriculums based on different profiles within the organization, all to ensure basic knowledge and raise awareness throughout the local organization on international trade compliance concepts. Leverage external expertise if needed. • Sanctions/Embargoes/GTS : in connection with sanctions compliance and export controls, review and resolve blocks in SAP/GTS. • Classification for Export Controls Purposes : collaborate in the classification of products, software, and technology, ensuring they are appropriately classified according to relevant national and international export control regulations. Guide Local Trade Compliance Officers (LTCOs) in maintaining export classification in relevant systems such as GTS/SAP.

Qualifications for the role

  • The candidate must have a minimum of 5 years of experience in international trade compliance, specifically in implementing export compliance training programs and procedural structures related to business processes in operations.
  • Must have been an integral part of teams or projects involving training and creating tools and procedures for export compliance.
  • Sufficient tenure to effectively communicate on various aspects of international trade compliance.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations related to export controls and customs in Canada and the United States is essential, as well as knowledge of Canada and US export control classification systems.
  • Canada EIPA/ECL, Canada CGD, U.S. EAR, U.S. ITAR. Sanctions, embargoes, and party screening. Export permits and licenses. Customs formalities and compliance. Knowledge of Incoterms 2020 is an asset.
  • Bilingual EN/FR: able to communicate in English and the primary language of local authorities both orally and in writing. English is required also to speak with clients outside of Quebec.
  • Shows curiosity: willingness to explore and learn. Detail-oriented, meticulous, and observant. Structured, with strong organizational skills. Independent, resourceful, and proactive.
  • Computer and Management Systems : GTS/SAP, SharePoint, MS Office: Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook (and Visio for process mapping is an asset)
