HSQE Positions Available: HSQE Specialist and HSQE Lead.


HSQE Specialist

McKeil Marine is seeking a skilled and experienced HSQE Specialist to join our team and play a crucial role working collaboratively within the HSQE team. Reporting into the ORM Manager, this role will be primarily responsible for working collaboratively with the HSQE team and Operations department to support all H&S functions. The HSQE Specialist will be well versed within federal regulations as it relates to regulatory compliance, incident investigations, internal/external auditing, risk assessment, and reporting all while promoting a vibrant safety culture. The HSQE specialist will be diligent in providing all current H&S requirements, while demonstrating the enthusiasm to initiate innovative solutions and systems.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Provides support and guidance in overseeing the development and implementation of H&S policies and procedures.
  2. Aids in identifying H&S risks on a continual basis while recommending change to internal and external safety practices.
  3. Conduct effective incident investigations while providing both quantitative and qualitative data in effort to create preventative and proactive measures.
  4. Prepare and manage all supporting claim documentation for underwriting of incidents.
  5. Work collaboratively with ORM and Operations to facilitate and lead company safety standards and annual objectives.
  6. Perform both internal and external audits to provide recommendations for corrective findings.
  7. Facilitate high level operational risk assessments.
  8. Provide onboarding orientation to all new hires both that of on vessel and in office.
  9. Implement and direct programs that aim to promote the wellbeing among all crew.
  10. Occasionally required to provide safety training including but not limited to; First Aid & CPR, Confined Space Entry, Fall protection and more.
  11. Visit company vessels as required to evaluate and examine current H&S measures through means of: crew responsibility, risk management, operational controls, training, response preparedness, incident reporting, investigations, record keeping, inspections etc.Other responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualification, Skills and Competencies Required:

  1. Degree or Diploma in H&S or related field.
  2. Five years of experience related to industrial or transportation industry
  3. Knowledge of federal health and safety regulatory requirements
  4. Strong ability to interpret and apply regulatory standards to marine industry
  5. Strong written and verbal communication with ability to generate detailed and comprehensive reporting
  6. Ability to investigate and resolve workplace incidents; while conducting root cause analysis and implementing corrective and preventative measures
  7. Certified trainer or experience in providing training such as First Aid & CPR considered to be an asset
  8. Auditing capabilities in the federal HSE environment considered to be an asset
  9. Experience within marine industry is considered an asset




HSQE Lead

McKeil Marine is seeking a skilled and experienced HSQE Lead to join our team and play a crucial role working collaboratively within the HSQE team. Reporting into the HSQE Manager, this role will be primarily responsible for working collaboratively with the Operations department to support all H&S functions. The HSQE Lead will be responsible for providing specialized support for the Company’s HSE policies and programs and maintaining compliance with applicable international, federal, and local health, safety and environmental regulations. The HSQE Lead will be diligent in providing all current H&S requirements, while demonstrating the enthusiasm and influence to initiate innovative solutions and systems, while promoting a vibrant safety culture.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Provides operational leadership and guidance to the overall H&S efforts of our business divisions, enabling McKeil Marine to meet all applicable safety related regulatory requirements and company standards.
  2. Overseeing the development and implementation of H&S policies, procedures, and emergency response programs, intended to mitigate risks.
  3. Proactive participant in the maintenance and continuous improvement of the company quality, safety, and environmental management system (QSMS).
  • Drives system compliance of vessel, operations and technical leaders under all H&S programs, initiatives, with ultimate goal of zero harm.
  • Employ HSQE best practices and risk assessment methodologies to minimize risk to our crews, assets, customers and environment within all aspects of the organization’s operations.
  • Drives the incident management process, provides guidance, process oversight, and where necessary participate in investigation of work-related injuries/illnesses or near misses as required in effort to create preventative and proactive measures.
  • Working with the HSQE Manager, participate and lead the proactive monitoring and assessment of emerging HSQE regulatory proposed changes, with the goal of proactively alerting to the changes and assessing their potential impacts to the organization.
  • In conjunction with Operations and Project Managers, assess hazards and safety protocols for new jobs, projects, or identified gaps in our existing systems.
  • Oversee and work with client/contractor safety pre-qualification processes.
  • Fosters active engagement with Safety Representatives. Drives strong and effective partnerships across many departments and teams to deliver exceptional health and safety programs.
  • Participates in and support the sharing of safety related information, skills, and best practices across the organization.

Minimum Qualification, Skills and Competencies Required:

  • Degree or Diploma in H&S or related field.
  • Minimum 8-10 years of related work experience in safety or related field, with strong knowledge of Federal and international laws and regulations, as well as ISM, ISPS, and MLC Management systems.
  • Experience with tanker or oil major related industries preferable.
  • Knowledge of federal marine safety related acts, and regulations.
  • Strong ability to interpret and apply regulatory standards to marine industry.
  • Strong written and verbal communication with ability to generate detailed and comprehensive reporting.
  • Ability to investigate and resolve workplace incidents; while conducting root cause analysis and implementing corrective and preventative measures.
  • Certified trainer or experience in providing training such as First Aid & CPR considered to be an asset.
  • Auditing capabilities in the Federal HSE environment considered to be an asset.
  • Experience within the marine industry is considered an asset.



Working Conditions/Special Notes:

  • Burlington head office with some travel to company vessels and warehouse(s)
  • Additional hours may be required dependent on operational demand
  • Hybrid work schedule upon successful completion of onboarding
