The Opportunity

We have an immediate opportunity for one permanent, part-time Controller. This role is responsible for supervising the day-to-day accounting and administrative duties of a small accounting team. This role produces financial reports, performs cash flow forecasting and budgeting, and leads special accounting projects as needed. This role is ideal for an experienced accountant seeking workday flexibility with an established, privately owned manufacturing operation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the weekly and month-end accounting processes.
  • Supervise, train, and review the accounting work produced by a small accounting team.
  • Prepare monthly journal entries, working papers, and reconciliations.
  • Analyze the operational and financial results and explain the company’s performance to the management team.
  • Prepare the month-end reports, cash flow forecasts, quarterly Board reports, and draft year-end financial statements.
  • Ensure the integrity and functioning of the accounting system and interface with the 3rd party Information Technology provider.
  • Manage the annual budget process.
  • Prepare the salaried payroll, review the hourly payroll, and manage all payroll accounts.
  • Process employee hire and termination documentation.
  • Work closely with the plant CEO, the plant operations team, and the head-office finance team.
  • Prepare year-end working papers for the external auditors to review.
  • Prepare documentation for the Board meetings.

Skills Required

  • Strong Excel skills.
  • QuickBooks familiarity preferred (Sage acceptable).
  • Hands-on experience with financial statement and budget preparation.
  • Strong understanding of financial systems, processes, and internal controls.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work well with a wide variety of groups and individuals across the organization.
  • Strong interest in understanding the underlying business and providing support to the operations team in financial and operational decision-making.
  • Professional maturity, judgment, and quality decision-making.
  • Ability to effectively coach and mentor team members.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Academic & Qualifications

  • Degree, certificate, or designation in accounting from a recognized institution or a combination of education and experience.
  • At least five years of full cycle accounting experience.
  • Good knowledge of accounting standards for private enterprises.
  • QuickBooks or Sage accounting system experience.
  • Ceridian/Dayforce or equivalent payroll system experience.

Remuneration

  • Hourly rate, commensurate with education and experience.
  • Benefits plan.
  • Hours expected to average 15 hours per week.
  • Flexibility to establish a tailored work schedule, within the base parameters of Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
  • Required to work at the plant location at 500 Streambank Avenue, Sherwood Park AB.
