Your Opportunity:

Henwood Treatment Centre offers a 62-bed live-in program for individuals dealing with substance use and concurrent mental health issues. We are seeking a creative, passionate Recreation Therapist to join our interdisciplinary team. The successful candidate will:

  1. Play a pivotal role in supporting the recovery process for the individuals we serve with a therapeutic recreation practice.
  2. Engage in therapeutic group recreation program development and facilitation using an evidence-based approach that maintains the uniqueness of everyone within a wellness-oriented, collaborative service delivery model.
  3. Integrate principles of trauma-informed care and harm reduction into their practice.
  4. Promote hope, provide supported opportunities to develop self-identity, facilitate the discovery of personal meaning of life, and promote personal responsibility.
  5. Coordinate care with other team members, cooperation with family and staff from other agencies involved in the individual’s life, and the development and enhancement of natural supports with the goal of facilitating the highest level of independence and self-management.
  6. Build capacity for new skill development opportunities within HTC.

Physical requirements of the position include the ability to sit/stand and walk through a large centre as well as use stairs, there is no elevator access. It is a requirement that the incumbent be physically able to respond to behavioral/clinical emergency situations that may occur anywhere in the building. Henwood is located in North East Edmonton and public transportation to the facility is limited.

Description:

As a Recreation Therapist I, you will be working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team, providing comprehensive services for patients (clients, residents) within your assigned program or service area. You will ensure the level of therapeutic recreation practice is evidence-based, patient- and family-centred, and in accordance with policies, procedures, and standards of practice. You will complete assessment, treatment, education, and management of clients’ treatment progress and provide clinical support and consultation. You will collaborate and communicate with the health care team and participate in patient rounds, family conferences, and meetings as related to the client and family.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of bachelor's degree in Recreation Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, or Recreation and Leisure Studies. Active or eligible registration with Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Experience working with individuals with substance use and mental health concerns. Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong understanding of harm reduction and trauma-informed practices. Experience with both group and individual education and treatment would be required. Experience in individual assessment is necessary. This position has been identified and is anticipated to transition to Recovery Alberta effective September 1, 2024. Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with an electronic medical record would be an asset. Background in program planning would be helpful. Previous experience in live-in treatment settings would be an asset.
