SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST ASSISTANT
Position Summary:
The Speech Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA) will be a member of a multidisciplinary team and provide services to children in our Community Preschool Education (CPE) program. As a Speech Language Pathologist Assistant, you will work alongside and report to a Speech Language Pathologist. The successful candidate will assist with various tasks around the planning of a curriculum that supports specific needs of the children in our programs. The SLPA will be responsible for the support of Individual Program Plans (IPPs) in accordance with Alberta Education requirements and the coordination of services from our team of therapists.

Full-time Term Contract – September 3, 2024 – June 27, 2025 (10 months)
Key Responsibilities:
- Work in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary classroom team to provide direct and indirect speech and language therapy in an inclusive manner that targets the SLP’s goals in an IPP.
- Travel to sites in Edmonton and surrounding areas to work with children at their preschool/daycare or home.
- Model and implement communication strategies throughout daily routines at preschool/daycare/home.
- Document and provide children’s progress to team members.
- Provide timely written summary of services provided.
- Create, organize and maintain materials for programming.
- Assist the SLP and Coordinating Teacher with various tasks. E.g.: file set up, create materials, administer probes, etc.
- Meet regularly with the SLP to discuss strategies and progress.
- Participate in various endeavors in support of the agency and our community.
- Must have capacity to work remotely and willing to work online sessions (if not on site) to support the children’s learning goals.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Diploma as a Speech Language Pathologist Assistant. An equivalency of education and experience may be considered.
- Speech Language Pathology experience with pre-school aged children (3 – 5 years) is an asset.
Required Skills:
- Familiarity with Board Maker and using Augmentative/Alternative Communication methods (communication boards, TouchChat, basic ASL, etc.) is an asset.
- Familiarity with pediatric motor speech disorders (apraxia, dysarthria, speech motor delay) is an asset.
- Ability to demonstrate enthusiasm, while engaging and motivating preschoolers both in person and through virtual programming.
- Champion of inclusive philosophy and must respect values of diversity and inclusivity in all its forms.
- Be adaptable, flexible, reliable and possess effective time management skills.
- Excellent organization and communication skills, with an ability to work well under minimal supervision.
- In addition to weekday requirements, you may be required to work occasional evenings and/or weekends for Community Options events, professional development sessions, etc.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Working Conditions and Conditions of Employment:
- Comfortable with frequent kneeling and squatting for much of the shift, and occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs.
- Able to wear Personal Protective Equipment, for home visits, community partner site, and program health and safety needs.
- Monday to Friday – Full-time / 35 hours per week.
- During office work, there may be periods of prolonged sitting, exposure to a computer screen and performing repetitive movements.
- Travel in and around Edmonton and surrounding area is required (20 – 25%).
- Current Alberta Childcare Intervention and Police Record check with vulnerable sector check (obtained within the past 6 months or more recent to hire date).
- Have valid in Standard Child Care First Aid with CPR or Standard First Aid and CPR.
- Have a valid Class 5 driver’s license.
- Possess a reliable vehicle and valid insurance for site visits (mileage from site to site is reimbursed).
