What You’ll Do:

The Director of Internal Audit serves as the Chief Internal Audit Executive for the company. The individual reports administratively to the President & Chief Executive Officer and functionally to the Audit Committee of the Board. This role is responsible for leading, planning, execution and reporting of all internal assurance engagements related to operational, financial, information technology, regulatory compliance or other audits. The Director of Internal Audit may consult on engagements in support of the organization’s strategic goals and initiatives.

The individual leads the Internal Audit Team and ensures objectives are achieved in a collaborative manner consistent with company values. The role collaborates with key leaders and managers across the company to develop internal improvement opportunities that enhance effectiveness. The Director of Internal Audit strives to contribute to an outstanding workplace culture maximizing employee engagement and collaboration with various departments.

Responsibilities:

  • Leads on ensuring work is performed independently, without bias, with due diligence and timeliness, and with adequate support for observations and recommendations in well-written reports.
  • Leads in providing consulting and advisory services in governance, risk management and controls to assist management in meeting its objectives.
  • Leads in coordinating audit/evaluation activities and deployment of resources with key leaders and other oversight functions to ensure appropriate coverage and minimize duplication of effort.
  • Leads in representing the internal audit function on behalf of the organization with respective regulators.
  • Leads in conducting special reviews requested by Senior Leaders and/or Audit Committee as required.
  • Leads in setting strategic direction for the internal audit function.
  • Leads in developing audit technique enhancements that provide a net benefit to the audit process.
  • Leads in developing and executing a risk-based internal audit plan that aligns with the organization’s strategic plan and risk profile. Subject to approval by the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors.

Requirements and Experience:

  • Candidates must reside in Canada and be authorized to work in Canada.
  • Chartered Professional Accounting designation (CPA) is required.
  • Insurance designation (CIP) would be considered an asset (or enrolled in the program).
  • Three to five years experience in a related role is required. Previous experience working in insurance or financial institutions is preferred.
  • Extremely proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and experience with an electronic audit working paper system.
  • Consistent ability to make excellent and well justified decisions in complex and/or high-pressured situations.
  • Ability to work with highly sensitive and confidential information.
  • Excellent negotiation skills by presenting information or arguments in a convincing manner and by focusing on what is important.
  • Excellent business acumen with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to recognize and identify critical issues.
  • Must possess strong attention to detail and good judgement.
