Job Description

Department: Laboratory Services
Status: Permanent Full-Time
Site: The Michener Institute
Salary: $61, - $77, per annum
Hours: 35 Hours per week

Primary Responsibilities of the Safety Officer
  1. Performing safety duties and coordinating projects under the direction of the Academic Chair, Medical Laboratory Sciences.
  2. Maintaining and coordinating safety programs.
  3. Assisting with the development of safety literature/departmental processes, support for incident response/investigation.
  4. Providing safety training, area inspections/audits.
  5. Coordinating multiple/simultaneous small scale projects for assigned groups.
  6. Performing quality management responsibilities.
  7. Performing data management/communication and administrative responsibilities.
  8. Performing cross-functional and other duties consistent with the job classification as assigned and/or as requested.
  9. Biological (limited) and chemical safety for the organization.
Responsibilities
  1. Assist in developing and maintaining safety literature within the institute.
  2. Provide guidance and support to personnel regarding safety programs and procedures.
  3. Respond to incidents of regulatory non-compliance and assist in follow-up investigations.
  4. Collect and maintain accurate records of all safety data and information.
  5. Ensure all programs and policies comply with relevant legislation.
  6. Coordinate provision of certificates/permits and maintain accurate records and tracking information.
  7. Perform laboratory inspections and/or audits as per regulatory requirements (Public Health Agency of Canada, Occupational Health & Safety Act, etc.).
  8. Deliver safety training to personnel.
  9. Conduct ongoing evaluation of quality indicators to ensure the integrity and safety of projects/equipment and notify appropriate bodies of deficiencies/gaps.
  10. Attend and actively participate in intra and inter departmental meetings as required.
  11. Provide support in organizing and facilitating the acquisition and transportation of biological materials from clinical sites.
  12. Oversee chemical and biological safety in the organization.
  13. Perform cross-functional and other duties consistent with the job classification, as assigned and/or required.
Qualifications
  1. Minimum over 3-5 years practical and related experience and/or 2 years on-the-job training required.
  2. Bachelor’s degree in microbiology, Environmental Sciences or equivalent required.
  3. Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or professional certification in occupational health and safety preferred.
  4. Demonstrated ability in researching, developing, and implementing policies or programs.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge of applicable legislation including the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  6. Strong communication, decision-making skills and possesses good judgement.
  7. Excellent presentation, facilitation, and public speaking skills.
  8. Demonstrated highly effective interpersonal and conflict resolution skills with experience in handling contentious matters with sensitivity, confidentiality, and balance.
  9. Experience with Microsoft Office Access, Word, PowerPoint, Excel required.
